End Federal Pension Aid Cut in Illinois

The federal grants to Illinois old age assistance will be suspended and state payments cut in half unless Illinois meets federal and state requirements. The state board listed four failures including accounting records, prompt eligibility decisions, fair hearings, and county guidance.

Six Carroll County Girls Chosen For State Fair Event

Six Carroll County girls were picked to compete against teams from other counties at the state fair in Springfield next month. Five will take part in the style revue and one will enter the judging contest. Judith Eigenower of the ME Carroll club had a perfect score in judging and is expected to excel at the state exhibit. Honored for the style revue are Reginniti Work, Dress for School. JeAnn Albork, Mt Carroll Community Club, blouse and tabbed blouse. Margaret Brower, Lanark Sewing Club, Dress for Better View. Jean Rawlins, Ideal Merry Sewers, dress for street or business. Dorothy Shirk, Prizeila Flat, skirt and blouse or sweater. Host bands and entries were harmonized by Lattonne Flot and Blanche Selim of the Merry Sewers. More than 100 girls from nine clubs participated in Friday’s event.

Complete paving completed on new highway No 64 route

The paving of a long stretch between Sycamore and Meridan completes the last gap in highway 64. A new route from this vicinity will soon be usable extending from Chicago to Savanna and through Iowa to Cedar Rapids. Concrete pouring on the final gap finished last Thursday. The route, designed to ease Lincoln highway congestion, is expected to handle a large traffic volume. From Chicago the route goes west through St. Charles Sycamore Oregon Mt Morris Brooksville Lanark and Mt Carroll to Savanna.

Circuit Clerk Weds Carroll County Bride Saturday

Circuit Clerk John R. Gelwicks married Miss Orson Kearnaghan on Saturday afternoon at the bride’s home in Woodland township. The couple, noted for their community roles, plan a northern trip and return mid August.

Legion post installs new Van Bibberskangen officers

Recently elected officers of Van Bibberskangen post of the American Legion at Savanna were installed Monday evening with Oscar Berga of Auntoy Lith district commander acting as installing officer. The new officers are Harold Evans commander Clyde F.B. Kinney senior vice commander Virgil Marth junior vice commander Irvin Tyler sergeant-at-arms Earle B.E. Englek king finance officer. Appointive officers also were installed.

Carroll Teams Enter State 4-H Judging Contest

Two Carroll county 4-H judging squads from Savannat High School and Mt Carroll Dairy judging took part in the state contest held in Urban on Monday. Winners will advance to national or regional championships tied to the National Livestock Exposition in Chicago and the National Dairy Show in Columbus.

Governor May Call Special Election Soon in Three Circuits

Governor Henry D. Horner likely to call special elections on November 3 to fill vacancies in the Fifteenth Sixteenth and Seventeenth circuits due to recent deaths. Vacancies also exist for county judges in Lee Stephenson and preparations include party nominations and bar association recommendations.

Hanover Residents Injured in Route 38 Crash Friday

Four Hanover residents were badly injured and five others from Hanover escaped injury when a Dodge driven by Anton Hovar and a Ford driven by Lee Townsend sideswiped on Route 80, two and a half miles north of Savanna at 9 PM Friday. The Ford rolled twice, then rested upright on the east shoulder. the Dodge halted after striking the embankment. Mrs Townsend suffered arm lacerations and head and body bruises, Lois Straitt had head injuries and scratches, Harold Reitz bore a deep cut to the bow, and Townsend also had head and body injuries.

Savanna Construction Co starts work on a new comfort station at Old Mill Park Savanna. The project includes a sand filter near Plum River, a 4 by 8 by 12 foot box filter with gravel and sand layers, and a septic tank soon to be installed connecting to station plumbing.

Brudi Named Assistant for State Fair School Post

Carroll county superintendent Lawrence E. Brudi is named assistant superintendent for the 28th annual boys state fair school to be held Aug 14 to 20 in Springfield. Delegates aged 15 to 21 from county districts will compete for two prizes of a gold medal and $10, district quotas vary by county.

Arm Home North of Savanna Razed by Fire

A one story three room frame dwelling on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Niles, Marcus six miles north of Savanna, and near Route 80, was destroyed by a Wednesday morning fire caused by a gasoline stove explosion. Loss estimated over 1,000 dollars, insured. Only bedding from one bed saved. Neighbors said the fire could not be checked. no alarm to Savaroie fire department. Mrs and Mrs Miles, with their son Floyd and family, will make their home nearby.

Chadwick Cheese Day Opens Parade at Main Street

The Chadwick celebration begins with a 10 o'clock parade down Main Street past the Judge's stand as crowds gather early for parking, free sandwiches, and coffee. Executives coordinated stands, while noon lunch and a Chadwick Tigers vs Carroll County Farm Bureau game follow at Weber's field with free acts at two.

Savanna Plans New Theatres To Replace Fire Damaged Hall

Savanna to build two new theatres this fall replacing the Orpheum lost to fire last February. The site will host a 300 seat modern house with air conditioning and state of the art projection. The Law Estate will own and lease to Chicago men Charles H. Miller and Fred B. Swanson who operate the Web theatre. Construction due to start within two weeks after ruins are cleared with completion expected this fall.

Two More Couples Apply For Marriage Licenses

Applications for marriage licenses were filed with the county clerk on Saturday July 11 by two more couples. The latest filings bring total applications to five with three licenses issued. Names include Lonnie Nesemeier and Peter Colbert of Shannon and William Kreider and Iva Woossner of Shannon.
