Rain Helps Corn Crop Amid Heat Wave Relief in Vicinity
Rainfall totaling nearly an inch Thursday night eased a week of heat in the midwest and improved corn prospects. Rain continued Friday night with highs in the high nineties over the weekend and harvesting of small grains resumed Monday. Damaging winds ripped limbs, flattened shocks, and toppled the new Lanark skating rink. Rockford suffered uprooted trees, blown signs, shattered plate glass, and power outages. Official records show two days last week reached 102 degrees, with McCray noting last decade’s high of 108 degrees in 1936.

Achievement Day Set for Carroll County 4-H Girls
Monday August 5 is the annual achievement day for Carroll county girls 4-H clubs. The event at the Mt. Carroll community house will have Miss Marian Simpson of Amboy as judge. Two Princeton men were jailed Sunday in Savanna after a rough fight outside the Hob Nob tavern on Route 80 near the Plum River bridge. A Monday hearing imposed fines of 25 and 5 dollars plus costs. four other Savanna residents were also arrested and fined 10 and 5 dollars with costs.

Savanna Man 56 Dies. Rites Held At Savanna Church
Savanna V ern Swingley 56 died near midnight Friday at his Savanna home. Funeral services were Monday at the Methodist church with burial in Savanna cemetery. Moose lodge assisted. He was born February 8 1884 in Mt Carroll son of Alfred and wife. He lived in Savanna since 1905 and married Hannah Hansen, with four children: Matthew Andrew Vern and Mrs Grevase Smith. After her death he married Eva Lahre. Widower survives with four children three brothers and three sisters.

Freeport Woman Loses Glasses in Lake Dive Rescue
A Freeport woman fishing west of Thomson dropped her $25 glasses in 15 feet of lake water while landing a bass. Diver Paul McGinnis located the glasses on the marked spot, retrieved them, and returned the eyewear to the grateful angler as witnesses applauded.

Five Hurt as Car Skids on Savanna Viaduct
