Deaths in County Mrs Jesse Smith and Fred M Briggs

Funeral services were held for Mrs Jesse Smith 68 at the Hickory Grove Brethren church in Wacker with burial at Hickory Grove cemetery. She leaves husband two daughters Ruth and Mrs John Smith of La Crosse Wis a grandson and four brothers and sisters. Fred M Briggs 77 died at his Savanna home of a heart attack with funeral in Sabula and burial at Evergreen cemetery. He married Effie L Albright and is survived by wife son Claude M Briggs a brother a sister and a granddaughter.

Carnival concession operator dies after heat in Mt Carroll

Nelson K. Barnes, 52, operator of two carnival concessions, collapsed and died Sunday afternoon in a Mt. Carroll city parking lot after the carnival arrived that morning. County coroner Dr. J B Schreiter ruled death from heart condition and heat. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. survived by widow and four children. a native of Stephensville Michigan.

Members of the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association received certificates of merit from the National Dairy Association for high butterfat production. A 350-pound plus per cow average qualified, with 1945 high herd at 423.4 pounds and 1946 high at 465.5 pounds. Names and farms of record holders listed.

Plan To Start Blacktop Road Construction Soon

Bid of Rein and Dahl, Stoughton, Wisconsin, for a bituminous surface road from Chadwick west to Route 78 was accepted by the state. County highway superintendent 8S. C. Campbell said property owners will be notified to move fences back as contractors plan to begin clearing the right of way within a week or 10 days. He urged care not to disturb survey stakes. The goal is to finish winding the road and complete the base course before winter.

Driver Fined in Disorderly Conduct Case at Savanna

Howard Heather of Savanna pleaded guilty before Justice Carroll to disorderly conduct and paid a $25 fine plus costs. He was arrested July 1 after a collision on Route 50 north of Savanna that seriously injured his companion Martha Hunter of Hanover. An indictment for driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated was reduced to disorderly conduct.

Merry Circle hib Plans For lower Show

Officers of the Merry Circle club of Salem township invite county flower gardeners to enter the club’s second annual flower show at Mt. Carroll grade school gym on Friday. Three entrants from nearby cities will be chosen. A featured display will be Cecil DeNier’s Cooper collection at Mt. Carroll. Show open to the public in afternoon and evening.

Four Highway Fatalities In Area Last Month

A total of four highway deaths occurred in the six county north western finois area during July, highway traffic records reveal. Stephenson, Ogle and Whiteside counties each reported one fatality, while Carroll and Jo Daviess counties had none.

Pasture Field Day Planned in Northwestern Illinois

A big Field Day on Pasture rejuvenation is planned for August 25 across four northwestern Illinois counties. Sponsored by University Extension, Soil Conservation and Farm Bureaus, the event will be on Kenneth Kuhlmeyer’s farm eight miles north of Lanark. Old blue grass pastures will be reworked and reseeded with legumes and grasses, with displays of new farming machines. The Tallman farming family in Freedom Township and nearby Carroll farms have demonstrated pasture improvements that boosted production, showing the benefits of liming, cultivation, fertilization, and sowing sweet clover, grasses, broome and alfalfa for high protein feed.

Former Nebraska residents gathered for the second annual Nebraska Picnic at Lawrence park Sterling with plans to repeat next year. Truck Damaged In Crash Near Lanark Saturday

A small truck driven by F. M. Everett of Chicago skidded off the highway two miles west of Lanark on Saturday, shearing a telephone pole and overturning. The occupants escaped serious injury after treatment by a Lanark physician. Everett continued to Chicago in another truck while transporting a midget racer.

Mary Sharron a 38 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Maynard Gaul of Lanark was treated for injuries after falling from a car in Freeport. She suffered head cuts and superficial burns on elbows knees and back before being released from St Francis hospital Friday.
