Babson urges unity among public groups to raise national well being amid debt and high taxes. He argues lower living standards reflect reduced production, urges higher personal standards, better goods, and more efficient service to protect jobs and share in food clothing and shelter.
Herbert Winston, 20, of Savanna admitted filing a false stolen car report after being bound over to the grand jury on a charge of driving a motor vehicle without a motor number. He earlier collided with another car near Old Mill Park and sought to dodge charges. Winston denied involvement in the collision with Rex Reinert's car, claiming his car was stolen while he was on an excursion boat. His vehicle was found in woods east of Savanna.
The 77th Whiteside County Fair starts Tuesday in Morrison with livestock entries due by Aug. 16 and general entries by Aug. 23. The week features harness and running races, free shows, a horse show, parades, dances, and band performances from Erie, Fulton, Morrison, and the Old Timers led by Billy Gray, the 88 year old drummer.
Harry Tallman’s Twenty-one head Holsteins and Guernseys led last month’s production in the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The herd averaged 1008 pounds of milk and 44.6 pounds of fat with three cows dry. Second place went to 50 purebred Holsteins owned by John Derrer averaging 1174 pounds of milk and 41 pounds of fat, three cows dry. Stransdale Farm No 2 placed third with 22 grade Holsteins averaging 1158 pounds milk and 40.8 fat. High individual cow was a grade Holstein on Stransdale Farm No 2 producing 1780 pounds milk and 105.5 pounds fat. Association average was 800 pounds milk and 31.4 fat with 480 cows dry. 146 cows exceeded 40 pounds of fat. Two purebred Holstein calves were born last month on Robert Carroll farm at Thomson, both red and white instead of the usual black and white.
Whitesside County Pomona Grange hosts a farm safety essay contest for all 40 jurisdiction members. Essays of up to 100 words are due September 1 to committee members Charles Wold John Duden J B Stouffer Kenneth Krempel and Delmar Lang with prizes of 10 for first 4 for second and 4 for third.
Illinois Farm Sports Festival features the Illinois Farm Bureau baseball championship playoff to crown the state champion. Winners advance to an elimination tournament at the University of Miami to determine the state title, part of a wide festival attracting thousands of spectators and many events.
Preparations for Carroll county 4 H Roundup and Farm Bureau picnic are nearing completion for Friday August 22 at Old Mill Park Savanna. The program opens with a tran shoot at 9 00 a m and livestock judging at 10 00 a m with Frank Norrish Morrison judging steers and breeding cattle Lindsay Prophetstown judging swine and Weiner Rochelle judging sheep. After a noon picnic a slate of livestock judging continues along with a 4 H girls style revue a speech by a guest speaker musical numbers ball games and band concerts.
An average of 145 bushels per acre was reported from a four acre plot on Dr. W. L. Derver's Mt. Carroll farm operated by Glen Pauley. Clinton oats yielded 80 bushels on another four acre plot and are noted for disease resistance amid a spotty overall crop.
State Auditor Arthur Lyneden reports July pension payments in Illinois totaling 5,015,023 a rise from June. Carroll county 261 recipients received 92,104 Whiteside county 748 recipients 40,151. ADC payments totaled 1,764,214 down 17,081 from June with 34 Carrel county recipients 1,089 and 173 Whiteside recipients 4,262.
The state awards a $160 contract to Hiarteny and Company of Chicago to resurface Polos Milledgeville road. The 10 1-4 mile project starts at Muederville’s edge and runs to Polo with asphalt surfacing and new paving. work begins about ten weeks hence and should take roughly 60 days. Traffic will be maintained during construction.
Carroll County 4H girls announced ratings for projects at Chadwick Achievement Day. Receipts cover Foods muffins biscuits breads salads desserts posters clothing dresses and flowers with multiple names and grade levels listed for each entry. Final ribbons and additional awards to be presented at the 4 Roundup event.
Kenneth Peugh, longtime Kraft Foods manager at Milledgeville, is moved to Freeport to oversee raw material inventory for Kraft process at the Freeport plant. Jer y Heisinger will replace him in Milledgeville, coming from Monroe, Wisconsin. Peugh served 20 years with Kraft and has military service in Italy and Korea.
Members of the Merry Maids 4-H club announce a candy sale Saturday night at the Quest Hardware corner. Proceeds support club activities and projects.
A fire at the George Randeeley farm northwest of Mt. Carroll destroyed the barn and about 15 tons of hay after starting in recently stored hay. Losses include 325 bushels of oats, a granary, a cultivator, milking machines, and a milk house. The Mt. Carroll fire department saved the milk house, neighbors moved machinery to safety, and tenant Leonard Hartman was away when smoke was spotted.
Carroll county trap-shooting team named to represent at the Farm Sports Festivals in Urbana on August 28 after Farm Bureau board decisions. Transportation paid. a qualification shoot is planned at the annual Farm Bureau penue and 4H Roundup in Old Mill Park, Savanna on August 22 at 9 50 a.m. Participants must supply guns shells and pay targets. 12 gauge loads hoped but shooters urged to bring their own. Dor Schneider daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Schneider Mt Carroll weds Wilmer L Smith son of Mr and Mrs Allen Smith at Mt Carroll Methodist church parsonage. Rev Frank Countryman presided. Attendants Roberta Joss and George Fecke of Mt Carroll. Couple to reside on a farm near Mt Carroll.
Mr and Mrs Frank Warfield of Thomson were killed Tuesday night when hit by an automobile as they sat in their yard. Double funeral services will be held at the Argo-Fay Methodist church with a prior service in Mt Carroll. Burial is at Upper York cemetery. Survivors include a daughter Vera and an adopted daughter Mildred.
Mrs Caroline Appel 93 died Sunday at her home south of Mt Carroll. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Frank Funeral Chapel Mt Carroll with Rev Frederick Freytag officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. She was born August 6 1854 in Germany and came to the United States as a young girl. She was married to Charles Appel who preceded her in death, and they had a son Charles Jr. Survived by three daughters Martha Appel Mrs Strautz of Mt Carroll and Mrs John Eisseller of Chadwick, one brother Fred Tack of Savanna, and a sister Mrs Hubert Lytle of Savanna.
Miss Alice Livengood of Milledgeville died August 6 at St Francis hospital Freeport. Funeral services were held at home and Milledgeville Brethren church with burial in Dutch Town cemetery. Survived by one brother Charles. Aaron Bushman 63 farmer near Milledgeville died August 6 from heat while threshing. Inquest in Sterling. Burial at Riverside cemetery Sterling. Survived by widow, son Ellwood, two granddaughters, and three brothers, Lloyd, William, and Cyrus.
A speeding 1929 Buick veered off highway 171 into the Warfield yard killing Mrs. Frank Warfield instantly and gravely injuring her husband, who died later at Savanna city hospital. Driver Colby Loechel, 26, of Chadwick, survived and is held for a coroner’s inquest as deputies investigate the crash scene.
Two Rock Creek township land owners were fined for failing to cut noxious weeds. Fred L. Horner complained. KRE F Brinkmier paid ten dollars and Edward Plock paid a similar amount after pleading guilty in Mt. Carroll before Justice Frank Schroeppel. 55 Grange members and families enjoyed a picnic dinner at Old Mill Park with games and prize winners: Grace Farthing, Charles Doemeier, Mrs. Lois Gordon, John Halfman, Bernadine Olson, and Lillian Stoner.
