Laura Cather ine Bance age 71 of Savanna died Friday at Savanna City Hospital after three weeks as a patient. Funeral services Monday at Law funeral home with Rev. Ernest Carder officiating followed by burial in Savanna Township cemetery. Graveside rites were by the VFW Auxiliary. Born July 31, 1889 in Exline Iowa she was the daughter of William and Emma Croft Leonard. She married Clavie Exline in 1908 and George Bance in 1915 and had lived in Savanna for 40 years. Surviving her are a son Merle Exline of Savanna and brothers Sherman and John.

Canning of sweet corn began Saturday night at the Lanark factory of the Green Giant Company. Workers took a brief breathing spell after finishing the pea canning season on Wednesday July 26. Corn from southern growing areas arrived as local crops were not yet ready. Night shifts labored amid heat and high humidity to keep processing going. Showers did not ease the heat.
