Registration totals rise as county completes voter cards

In Curcoll town and Mt. Chrrall board offices workers explain that many registrations were delayed due to date oversights. County totals show Chadwick 168, Thenwon 169, Lanark 27, Mt. Cariol 444, Mill edgeville 201, Shannon 120, Savannah 926 with higher-than-expected turnout and staff strain. Additional registration cards were rushed from Springfield to finish the process.

Tire Purchase Certificates Granted in Second Week of April

The Carroll rationing board lists tire purchase certificates awarded in the second week of April. Recipients cover obsolete tires trucks cars and retreading services across Mt. Thomson Bank Authorized To Pay 15 Percent Dividend

Arthur C. Lueder state auditor announces the Thomson State Bank Thomson Illinois is authorized to pay a 15 percent dividend totaling 10 949 07 to its depositors after a 1933 moratorium. Depositors waived 35 percent of their deposits totaling 79 165 80 allowing the bank to resume business. This is the eighth payment and brings the total returned to 80 percent of the original waiver.

Carroll county tire quota cut amid supply limits

The county board led by Director B L Peck reports a reduced tire quota amounting to about two tires weekly per Carroll County. Certificates for doctors veterinarians truckers and others may be unavailable due to exhausted allotments. Retreading and recapping for defense workers and farmers continue where possible, with bus transport aiding defense workers in several communities. The board aims to honor vital needs for health public safety and law enforcement. A list of certificates granted during the third week in April follows, detailing obsolete tires implement tires tubes and new passenger car tires allocated to residents and merchants.

Fuller to Head County USO Drive in May

R G Fuller of Savanna is Carroll County chairman for the USO drive set to start mid May. At a Friday meeting in Savanna 25 people from Carroll Whiteside and Jo Daviess counties elected officers including Bertha M Smith vice chairman Myrtle Rose secretary W J Schreiner treasurer Lewellyn Fay chairman Whiteside and F H Shuman treasurer Morrison. Carroll County's quota is 3250 and a USO center on the second floor of the Ballas building at Main and Madison will open early in May.

Cattle Prices Hit A New Top in Chicago Market

Carroll county buyers McCullough and Hook led a week of high prices at the Chicago Stock Yards. They sold yearling steers at 15.00 per cwt, averaging 1074 pounds, while Frank and Dwight Turner shipped 26 hundredweight of seven month Poland China hogs at 14.25 per cwt. Cattle hit a new yearly high at 17.25 per cwt on Wednesday, the top since 1937 and the highest for April in 23 years. hogs rose to 14.50 per cwt with an average of 14.35.

State Highway Police Officer Herbert Krahn of Savanna was badly injured when his state car crashed about 1 a m Saturday four miles northwest of Chadwick on Route SR. He was found unconscious by Floyd Hartman and three Milledgeville men, treated in Sterling hospital for a severe head injury, and authorities investigated the sideswipe and crash scene.

Milton Weigle 73 Shannon farmer dies in Freeport hospital

Milton Weigle a retired Shannon farmer died late Monday night in a Freeport hospital. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at Sharman funeral home with Rev. I. D. Leatherman of Lanark officiating. Burial will be in Brethren cemetery. Born November 16 1868 near Shannon he was the son of Jacob and Mary Weigle and lived in Shannon all his life. Chth Grade Graduation Set For May 27

Eighth grade pupils in Carroll county rural schools will hold graduation exercises May 27 in the Me Carroll high school auditorium. Final exams are underway in rural schools and will close soon. The old practice of all eighth graders taking tests in Mt Carroll on one day was dropped this year. Savanna Man Charged With Manslaughter

William Werthwein of Savanna is charged with manslaughter after a car strike killed Donald Van Netta, 8, of Platteville. He waived preliminary hearing, posted no bond, and was held in Grant county jail. He admitted striking the boy and said he drove to a local hospital. three hours earlier he paid a fine for drunken driving. He owns a Chestnut Park grocery in Savanna.

Increase in Illinois OAA and ADC payments in April

The state auditor's report shows ongoing growth in old age assistance OAA payments and aid to dependent children ADC through April. In Carroll County OAA totaled 10 51 thousand dollars paid to 441 recipients while ADC warrants reached 1 474 dollars covering 102 dependent children across 44 warrants.

Milledgeville Man Indicted in Ogle County Case

Garrett Fredericks 41 of Milledgeville is indicted for assault with intent to commit murder by an Ogle County grand jury. He has been jailed since Apr 1 after his wife was shot twice at the Polo home of her sister Mrs Lloyd Bellows. Fredericks allegedly admitted firing two revolver shots. The shooting stemmed from domestic difficulties. Mrs Fredericks recovered enough to leave Dixon hospital after weeks of treatment.
