Beginning May 13 volunteer workers nationwide will visit every income earner to secure pledges for war bonds and savings stamps. The effort, likened to civilian Minute Men, urges citizens to pledge amounts they can invest to fund military needs and reduce future taxes.
The first World War II casualty list released by the Navy on Tuesday names three Carroll county men who had previously been reported as lost. Orval A. Rosenbery of Chadwick a shipfitter second class, Robert B. Grissinger of Savanna a seaman first class, and James Howard Hoover of Savanna a fireman third class are listed as having died in service.
A two car crash on Route 80 near Chestnut Park store involved Bernard Aron of Savanna and Don Yeager south of Savanna. Aron and Yeager escaped with minor bruises while Dave Raymond Jr suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to Savannah hospital. Both cars were badly damaged.
Carroll County Taxpayers association held a Mt. Carroll dinner meeting to coordinate with officials on leaner budgets. Officials report county rate trimmed from 55 to 30 cents and Savanna township reducing town and relief budgets by 11 270. Overall Carroll county taxes may drop about 31 000 next year with broader regional cuts.
State Highway Police Officer Herbert Krahn of Savanna was dismissed Friday from Sterling public hospital where he had been a patient for a week after recovering from injuries from a car wreck north of Chadwick. He was brought to his Savanna home following the discharge.
The Chadwick School held two days of signup for War Ration Book One with 692 people registered. In Mt Carroll the tally was 571 books issued after 12 registrants had excess sugar and could not receive a book. Rural areas finished registration Monday, with Thomson reporting 872 registrants and 686 books issued. Final county totals awaited late Thursday as registration continued in several communities.
Obituary notices from Carroll County record multiple deaths. Mrs. Thomas Elder, 91, of Shannon died in Phoenix after living many years near Shannon. burial in Brethren cemetery. Terry M. Burns, 65, of Rockford died at Savanna ordnance depot hospital after a heart attack. George W. Ervin, 95, Savanna, longtime resident and Milwaukee Railroad employee, buried Center Hill. Mae Ergin and eight sons and two daughters survive. Mrs. Alice Hoover, 53, Mt. Carroll widow of Frank Hoover, died at home with funeral at residence and burial in Oak Hill. Survivors include children, siblings, and grandchildren across several towns.
Paul Ahrens, a 22-year Japan veteran tea buyer now farming in Rock Creek township, leads a 297 acre operation near Milledgeville with modern homes, soil conservation and rising dairy, hog and poultry production. The county war board unveils farm labor replacement plans and a Sterling office to aid hiring, while essay winners in the Food for Victory contest are announced.
Charles Harris George Daehler and Lloyd Handel traveled to Harvard Illinois last week on business and enjoyed a cordial meeting with Earl McIntyre former Review editor. They report McIntyre expects a call for induction into the army soon.
Seven Carroll county men left for Chicago this morning to report for final army examinations at the induction station. The released list includes Bernard Earl Ritchie Savanna William D. Baxter Milledgeville Howard A. Noble Savanna Robert L. Ripley Milledgeville Leslie Carl Lehr Savanna George Rice Thomson Wilson G. Shaw Savanna. Kyle Bennett of Thomson was slated to leave but his enlistment in the navy was approved.
Carroll county cattle feeder Lloyd Sturtz sold 28 head of heifers fed on his farm near Lanark at the Chicago Stock Yards midweek market. The drove averaged 855 pounds each and brought 13.25 dollars per cwt. in straight sale.
Chadwick high school athletes won the Carroll conference track meet in Mt. Carroll with 38 points, Lanark 36, Mt. Carroll 34.5, Milledgeville 9, Thomson 3. Frommelt claimed two firsts including the broad jump, Keever of Lanark excelled with three wins and a tie, while Mt. Carroll took the 80 yard relay in 1 46.8.
Mississippi Palisades state park north of Savanna opened for the 1942 season on Sunday along with Old Mill park in Savanna. Spring cleanup is complete, and buildings benches roads and trails were repaired. Lower attendance on opening day due to chilly weather, but thousands expected over the season. Palisades custodian Ben Maier and assistant John Landorf oversee operations.
Mount Carroll high school won the Thursday triangular meet at Point Rock Park, scoring 54 points to take first ahead of Fulton with 30 and Chadwick with 33. Readouts include multiple event placements for Mount Carroll athletes like Guenzler, Ivey, Frommelt, Colehour, and Warfield across sprints, distance, field events, and the 880 yard relay with a 1:48.5 time.
A string of May weddings unfolds in Savanna and nearby towns. Gladys Lambert and Ronald Spangenberg wed at St John’s in Savanna with family in attendance as other couples join in ceremonies at the Savanna ordnance depot and in Milwaukee and Peoria churches, followed by receptions and motor trips.
A village wide war bonds pledge drive begins May 11 in Chadwick and Thomson with volunteers canvassing every income earner. Local committees led by Don C. Harris in Chadwick and Norman D. French in Thomson organize area assignments, aiming to hit county quotas of 53 300 in May and build toward a billion dollars per month by year end.

W. Hostetter, Edwin Lawrence Jr., Daniel Kennedy, Ambrose Daniels, John Reinehr, Charles Fisher, and others, with various sections, townships, ranges, and subdivisions noted. Records show deeds, quitclaims, and trusts affecting lots and blocks in Chestnut Park Savanna, Meyer's Add Milledgeville, Hurley's Add Mt. Carroll, Lamb's Sub York, Eby's Add Lanark, and related areas.
Three towboats pushed a total of nine barges north on Saturday and Monday while one went south with four barges on Sunday. The John W Weeks carried four barges north on Saturday, the D C Webber carried four south on Sunday, the Twin Cities four barges north on Monday, the Alice M Tyler carried one barge of coal, and the D C Webber returned north with gasoline on Monday.
Chicago psychiatrists conducted a one hour interview with Billy Geiseman a 12 year old Shannon youth in Carroll county jail awaiting first degree murder charges The doctors planned further examination and did not report to the circuit judge at this time Also interviewed were Geiseman family relatives of the slain Krugjohanns and Shannon residents acquainted with the boy
