Lulu M. Stevens reports Carroll county raised 1108 dollars and 52 cents in the 1942 Christmas Seal Sale, about 200 dollars more than 1941. Twenty five percent goes to state and national tuberculosis groups. the rest supports local TB control, including tests for seniors and eighth graders, teachers, and school juniors, with x rays as needed.
Mrs May Lulu Alden a Clinton Iowa restaurant owner died at 7 45 am Friday in Jane Lamb hospital after months of illness She was born December 26 1895 in Maquoketa daughter of Tolbert and Lydia Streets She operated the May Alden cafe on South Second street for years and had surgery at University hospital Iowa City Surviving are three sisters three brothers and several nieces and nephews Funeral services were held Monday in Clinton and burial followed in Clinton Memorial park.
Pfc Paul C Doty recently promoted to corporal at Fort Benning Georgia attended a Sunday dinner at his parents farm near Savanna with 22 people present. Guests included Merle Doden Morrison Harold Doty Chicago Allison Frederick Lanark James Cottrall family Arthur Weidman family and Doty relatives Glen Wayne Helenmae and Corp Paul Doty.
I W Cramer 84 a Berreman township resident died about noon Monday in a Freeport hospital after several weeks there Funeral services were held at 1 pm at the home and 2 pm at the Church of God Mt Carroll Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery He was born November 11 1858 in Waynesboro Pennsylvania and married Mary E Stahl September 2 1880 The couple moved to the area in 1881 Surviving are three daughters Miss Bertha Cramer Miss Della Cramer Mrs Frank Switzer four sons Roy Carl Bruce Burton and two brothers Charles and Benjamin

County Nurse Miriam Pape reminds Chadwick and Thomson parents of the second diphtheria inoculation and smallpox vaccination dates. The Chadwick program is Thursday April 29 and Thomson Friday April 30, both at 9 a.m. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Larson of Morrison visited Sunday afternoon with Mr and Mrs Albert Adolph.

Adoption of a uniform air raid warning system for Illinois is reported by Capt. William F. Waurd. The plan introduces Blue caution blasts, Red attack alerts, traffic stops, blackout rules, and an adaptable all clear for local Civil Defense leadership. It stresses two caution periods and urges public familiarity with the signals.
Ensign Donald Hoy of Shannon is missing in action with no battle details provided by the Navy. His last contact was in November 1942. he had been at sea eight months and previously worked as a trust officer after graduating from the University of Hindia law school in 1936.
War Manpower Commissioner McNutt announced a nationwide job freeze effective Saturday night under presidential orders to curb job switching for higher wages. Violations face up to 1000 dollars fine and up to one year in prison. essential and non essential workers are defined, with penalties and broad scope across wage brackets.
Two brick houses are under construction on the Dupuis estate on north Main street in Savanna by the Johnson brothers. The Dupuis property was recently bought by J. G. Smith Construction Company of Chicago. Each house will have five rooms and a bath and be modern throughout. The firm plans additional houses on this property and elsewhere in the city.

A. W. Cravens, Shannon school superintendent for six years, will depart to lead Galena schools. He has 13 years on the Shannon faculty, including seven as athletic director and six as superintendent, and filled the coaching role last year when the regular coach went to war.
A Carstensen Freight Lines semi-trailer tipped in Fulton noon wind and landed on a parked car owned by Mrs. Kinsley of Dam No 13 lock house. No one was inside. Mrs. Kinsley works at Fidelity Life Association. her husband is employed there. The truck’s heavy load caused the crush.
County treasurer reported a total of 122825 dollars from 1942 taxes distributed to district and high schools, townships, cities, road and library funds. Large shares went to schools, with 37825 to district schools and 45250 to high schools. other allocations followed. Distribution depends on incoming tax payments before June.
Fire destroyed one home and damaged another in Savanna over the weekend. Saturday afternoon a fire at Oak Park in the east end destroyed the **Lily Yenney** residence, with losses over $1,200 and flames shooting 25 to 30 feet high. Yenney escaped unharmed. Friday’s blaze at a four room home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Keehner near the Savanna Sabula bridge damaged ceilings, kitchens, and woodwork due to defective wiring. no injuries reported.
Fire in Savanna on April 15 damaged a basement apartment causing about 300 dollars in damage. The blaze started when ashes were thrown into a cardboard box igniting partitions flooring and flooring. Mrs. Margaret LaShelle and daughter occupied one unit while Virgil Phifer and family occupied the other. Fire crews arrived about 9 30 p m and found the fire had gained headway burning a Phifer unit.
Sheriff Eber Shepherd announces the discontinuance of the program to collect guns and ammunition for the navy started two weeks ago. F W Godhenour of the war department says the request had no proper authority and the navy does not want civilian guns. Shepherd acted in good faith.
Mr and Mrs L W Sikkema of Savannah received letters from west coast correspondents claiming their son Richard Sikkema is a prisoner of the Japanese in Tokyo and in good health. The couple learned on April 16 1942 he was missing after the Java Sea battle and on February 15 this year the Navy department notified him as a prisoner captured in the sea battle.
