Eureka Kansas April 11 1947 Babson argues against more school taxes as a cure for juvenile delinquency. He urges adult education and work experience, warns against overreliance on schools, and calls for self-control and moral uplift through churches and home life.
The twenty eighth Gateway Classic Track and Field Meet will be held in Clinton on May 2 1947. The Chamber of Commerce and KROS with Clinton Herald donate trophies for Class A and B winners. About 250 invitations sent to Eastern Iowa Western Illinois and Wisconsin schools. Entry blanks to be issued this week and a coaches dinner sponsored by the Chamber.
Thomson briefs Miss Mary Sherula about a Wa-Tan-Ye club meeting in Savanna on Monday. Arthur Anderson of West La Fayette Indiana was a Saturday dinner guest of Mr and Mrs Ernest Smith. Anderson preached a sermon in Savanna Sunday and visited friends in Mt Carroll.
April 20 marks the opening of Public Health Nursing Week in Carroll County and the nation. The observance honors 97 years of public health nursing and highlights the nurse Miss Margaret A Handlin as a key local figure. The program aims to promote general health, prevent disease, and coordinate with health and welfare agencies.
Clyde Morgan Sr and Mrs Clyde Morgan announce the marriage of their son Clyde to Martha J Gilkey on March 30 in San Francisco California. The bride is California born and previously worked for a telephone company. Clyde attended Mt Carroll schools and served two years in the army with a Manila discharge last year. He has re enlisted for three years and is stationed at Camp Beale California. They will reside in Marysville California.
Brown Swiss breed exhibitors from seven northwestern Illinois counties prepare for the Canton show and judging contest at Taylor Park Freeport on Tuesday May 1 with plans underway and entry closes April 30. The event offers quilt and awards for 4 H and Future Farmers of America members with a judging contest at 10 am and judges selected to assess outstanding animals across Carroll Jo Daviess Lee Ogle Whiteside Stephenson and Winnebago counties.
State auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports March payments for old age pensions in Illinois reached 4 957 741 and aid to dependent children ADC disbursements totaled 1 903 091, up from February. Cayell and Whiteside counties show pensions and ADC figures with recipients and amounts for Carroll Whiteside and related dependents.
A diphtheria smallpox and whooping cough immunization drive will be held this month in Milledgeville with Dr A Flesman and county nurse Miss Margaret Handlin coordinating. Forms are distributed through schools for parent consent. sessions begin April 24 at the Milledgeville Public Health Center with vaccines for those unvaccinated or due for boosters in the past five years.
Elmer Zugschwerdt reports progress on securing right of way for a proposed blacktop road from Chad Wilweet to Route 78. One owner, Lert Johnson of York Township, remains to sign. Road would relocate from township ditch to new route, requiring about seven acres. Construction contracts expected within weeks. Zugschwerdt and J. C. Capell oversee highway work in Fort Hessen.

Hearbert Isenhart a car inspector for the Milwaukee railroad at Savanna was bound over to the Carroll county grand jury on larceny charges. He allegedly stole three storage batteries from Milwaukee shipments and was taken to Mt. Surell by Sheff Henry Truninger. Jamnahart was charged with the theft and was picked up by Jule Oswald of the Milwaukee railroad police.

Duggar Post No 553 will host with entertainment and a suspenseful, undivulged agenda item. Commander Emyre urged posts to inform Meledgeville post of any new business or visiting veterans.
The Mount Carroll Community Recreation association is formed to promote sports for local youths and nearby rural residents. Thomas Fitz is president and William Cronister secretary treasurer. directors include Charles E. Kessler Levi Zink and John Frank. The first project is a softball team named Mount Carroll Merchants in Savanna City league. Clarence Buchenau to manage with new uniforms ordered. Over 700 dollars raised for a new diamond at Point Rock City Park with lights, open to all groups. Future plans include a basketball team, a small gym for boxing wrestling ping pong and handball.
Laura Daehler and Es ther Schmaling with several locals visited Dubuque over the weekend. Henry Henz is seriously ill in Sivania city hospital. Argo Fa Consolidated district held a Thursday program for many children and band group performances. Luncheon followed, and church Sunday school officers were elected with Mrs Leslie Durward as chair. New members joined the church. tours included Mr and Mrs Leo Prowant of Dixon visiting in the area.

Joseph Valard McIntyre 26 of Hanover and Savanna born Feb 7 1922 dies when his car leaves Route 80 and tumbles three times near Henry Airhart farm. His companion Catherine Avery 28 escapes with minor injuries. coroner rules skull fracture death. McIntyre a WWII Navy veteran and Scenic Bus Line driver survived by family including brothers Bernard and John, and sister Mrs. Bernard Jones.

Workmen began building a new barn on the old Cole farm located north of Thomson. Sunday visitors included Mr and Mrs Lawrence Sullivan and Mrs Ivy Orcutt who called on Mrs Mary Sullivan of Fenton. Dr N Genevieve Chipman, formerly of Thomson and Savanna, now from Peoria, visits in Harold Beutske’s home. Carl Lohmeier of Peoria and Henry Lohmeier hosted weekend guests, while Paul Geerts stayed with Ab Pring and family Thursday evening.
Mrs Vera G. Phillips of Chicago and Robert Eakle of Savanna were injured Sunday when Phillips lost control of her car and crashed into a tree and a fence at the Herbert Almquist home south of Savanna. Both were taken to Savanna hospital for facial stitches. Eakle suffered a compound fracture of the right arm below the elbow. The car was badly damaged.
