Lanark Tragedy: Burkholder Home Struck by Fire
A silent early morning blaze at the Charles Burkholder home in Lanark claimed two sons, Steven 17 and John 6, after attempts to rescue them failed. The State Fire Marshall offered no cause. The family mourns with survivors including parents Frances and Charles, sister Patricia, brother Roger, and grandparents. Memorial services were held in Shannon.

Homemakers Honor Officers and Name Annual Award Winner
Carroll County Homemakers Extension Association held its 24th annual meeting on April 6 at Naaman Diehl Auditorium with nearly 125 attending. Officers were installed, awards given for membership gains and attendance, a memorial service observed, and a meal shared with a guest speaker and choral entertainment. Christine Wink received the Dorothy Footitt Scholarship. Eldin Bonjour was honored with a past president’s pin.

Elect Three to Thorn School Board No Contest
Fifty four votes were cast in the Thorn Community Consolidated Unit School district election to elect three board members. Warren Waltrip and Eugene Halfman each received 54 votes, Raymond Adolph 53, and one write-in for Tom McKee. Halfman and Adolph win three year terms, Waltrip two years to fill the late Fred Hook’s unexpired term. Clerks were Marian McKee, Janice Brunner and Pat Wiersema.

County Loses Deputy Helms for Mt Carroll Police Chief Post
Carroll County will lose Deputy Howard Helms after 1967 service with the sheriff's department. He will become Mt Carroll's Police Chief at 8000 dollars annually, an increase of 1800 from county pay. Helms, 26, of Lanark, aims to move with his wife and two children once housing is found.

Carroll County Heart Fund Drives Surpass Goal
The Carroll County Heart fund drive ended with a grand total of 4746.85 dollars, exceeding the 3500 dollar goal by 1200. A report by treasurer Mel Jones of Savanna named co chairs Mrs. Loyal Schreiner and Mrs. Lawrence Shiley of Mt. Carroll. Individual township and community totals were listed, with Savanna and Thomson among top contributors. Jones called 1970 the most successful drive yet.

Fire Threatens Lloyd Becker Farm Buildings
Firefighters from Mt. Carroll and Savanna battled stubborn blazes on the Lloyd Becker farm northwest of Wacker. Sparks from railroad tracks apparently started the fire, threatening all buildings and burning fence posts, gates, sheds, timberland, and pasture before control was gained. Mrs. Becker returned home to find flames at the back door, which she beat out with a broom as neighbors aided responders and smoke billowed across the area.

Government Day Planned for Carroll County April 30
Final plans were set at the Carroll County American Legion Auxiliary meeting for Government Day on April 30. High school students will work in courthouse offices for a day, with the Chadwick unit hosting a noon luncheon for students teachers and county officials. The meeting named a nominating committee and featured a program of EMH student articles. The next gathering will be a potluck April 22 at the Milledgeville library.
