Is it any wonder Carroll area may become a national recreation area

Longtime Carroll County residents watch for the possible designation of a 40000 acre national recreation area northeast of Savanna and northwest of Lanark as studies continue. The Corps of Engineers and Interior officials debate water storage to support recreation with a reservoir. if not feasible the area near the river might join the Upper Mississippi study. The Corps expects a May decision and further updates are promised.

Bates leads dairy judging with top score in county event

Kathy Dauphin Bates, a 15 year old 4-H member from Savanna, topped the dairy judging at Saturday’s 4-H and FFA contest with 390 of 400 points. The top 12 also included Roger Williams and John Smith among others from Mt Carroll Savanna Milledgeville Chadwick and Lanark with high placements and coach Don Keim of Mt Carroll noted.

Land Within Village Sold to Illinois Mobile Homes Firm

Approximately 30 acres on Thomson's village edge sold by Mrs. Amelia Sack to Earl Patterson of Coal Valley Illinois. Patterson plans expansion of his mobile home operations in Thomson with undetermined future plans and runs Earl's Mobile Homes in multiple states. The land stretches north from the Battaglia property to the east west road and from Highway 84 to the Milwaukee railroad, excluding residential lots along the highway.

York Cedar 4-H Club Holds April Meeting

The York Cedar 4-H Club met April 6 in the school cafeteria with President Larry Wagner presiding. Members were reminded of the public speaking contest April 25 at Mt. Carroll with entries due by April 21. A swimming party planning committee was formed: Pam Kaufman chairwoman, Edwin Bielema and Mary Dykstra.

Thomson High Joins U.S. Grant Conference for 1971-72

Thomson High School has been unanimously accepted into the U.S. Grant athletic conference, effective for the 1971-72 basketball season. The six‑team group will include Scales Mound, Galena ver, Elizabeth, Stockton, Warren, and Thomson, expanding an 18‑game schedule. Thomson aims to participate in all conference programs and hopes for a larger holiday tournament participation. Chadwick also gains acceptance into the conference.

Village Board Considers Sewer Water Extensions Plans

The village board discussed financing for potential sewer and water extensions tied to Earl Patterson's north edge land purchase for a mobile home court. An engineer will be invited to assess costs while other improvements and delinquent accounts were reviewed and new Turn signs planned for Main Street.

TOPS Club Names Queen of Year and Installs Officers

The Thomson TOPS club met at the Community Church for its annual meeting. Officers installed for the year were leader Roberta Sikkema co leader Harriet Holesinger secretary Mavis Tipton treasurer Erma Hoy recorder Frances Nagel and reporter Sylvia Witt. Eisie Turner named Queen of the Year having lost 44 percent. Members reaching goals were Gladys Cate Isadore Senneff and Phyllis Dykstra promoted to KOPS. Winners in divisions received roses charms. a decorated cake by Betty Hartman was served.

FHA Banquet Highlights Student Club Event

The annual FHA banquet on April 7 at Thomson High School featured a full program with opening by Cheryl Hook, invocation by Pam Kaufman, and roll call with parents introduced by Karen Root. The Thomson and Chadwick boards share a guidance counselor for the 1970 71 school year. Gerald King 23 recently a graduate intern at Southern Illinois University will split duties with his wife Mrs King a special education teacher with no children.

No Contest in School Election

Voters will elect three board members for three year terms with Eugene Halfman and Ray mond Adolph running for the seats and Warren Waltrip seeking the two year term of the late Fred Hook. The election is Saturday April 11 from noon to 7 pm in the Thomson cafeteria with Mariar McKee Janice Brunner and Gladys Kustes as election judges.

County Wide Rubella Immunization Clinic Set For April

Carroll County hosts a single day mass rubella immunization for about 3000 children in grades one through three at nine school sites on April 14. Eight Carroll County Residents Receiving Rabies Shots

Eight Carroll County residents undergo the rabies vaccination series after a Holstein heifer on the Becker farm near Mt. Carroll contracted the disease and died March 23. Carroll County Teachers Outdoor Education Workshop

Carroll County teachers will attend an outdoor education workshop on April 30 at Timber Lake resort from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dr. Maurice Whener of the Lorado Taft Field Campus at Northern Illinois University will lead The IN Teacher Goes OUT. The event is funded by a Title V mini grant via the Carroll County Outdoor Education committee formed by local teachers. The committee will meet April 20 at Timber Lake with Dr. Wiener to finalize plans.
