Longtime Carroll County residents watch for the possible designation of a 40000 acre national recreation area northeast of Savanna and northwest of Lanark as studies continue. The Corps of Engineers and Interior officials debate water storage to support recreation with a reservoir. if not feasible the area near the river might join the Upper Mississippi study. The Corps expects a May decision and further updates are promised.

Bates leads dairy judging with top score in county event
Kathy Dauphin Bates, a 15 year old 4-H member from Savanna, topped the dairy judging at Saturday’s 4-H and FFA contest with 390 of 400 points. The top 12 also included Roger Williams and John Smith among others from Mt Carroll Savanna Milledgeville Chadwick and Lanark with high placements and coach Don Keim of Mt Carroll noted.

Thomson High Joins U.S. Grant Conference for 1971-72
Thomson High School has been unanimously accepted into the U.S. Grant athletic conference, effective for the 1971-72 basketball season. The six‑team group will include Scales Mound, Galena ver, Elizabeth, Stockton, Warren, and Thomson, expanding an 18‑game schedule. TOPS Club Names Queen of Year and Installs Officers
The Thomson TOPS club met at the Community Church for its annual meeting.
