Private Michael Yanoseik 26 of Savanna ordnance depot was killed as their car crashed into a cement culvert on Route 80 four and a half miles north of Savanna. Four soldiers were injured including Col Bernie Winn Jr Keasbey Pvt John Dudash Keasbey and Pvt Robert Wingo South Charleston. Yanoseik home in New York City. Funeral services planned in New York.

Ervin Merkle, 30, of Lanark was critically injured Tuesday afternoon when thrown from his motorcycle two miles north of Sterling on Polo road. He suffered a fractured skull and chest injuries. doctors reported little hope for recovery. Merkle and two other riders were en route from Sterling to Lanark. Eubanks and Kramer turned back 300 yards and found Merkle beside the road. Highway police Lt. Raymond H. Cramer said skid marks showed the bike slid 75 feet. Merkle is the son in law of John Kahler of Chadwick.

William Judd proprietor of the Carroll County Maytag company at 521 Main Street Savanna reported a break in between Saturday night and Monday morning. A filing cabinet containing $40 and a bookkeeping system were missing. the cabinet was found later in the Mississippi River north of Savanna. Only the money was missing and the books were ruined. entry was gained through a broken rear window.

Savanna Youth Dies After Leaning From Car
Marvin M Leopold 21 of Savanna fell from a moving car on West Seventh street Sterling and died at Sterling Public hospital. Coroner's jury ruled accidental death. Leopold had leaned partially out to inspect a tire and struck his head on the pavement fracturing a cervical vertebra. He had warned earlier that day about the danger of leaning from the driver seat. He was a civil service worker at Savanna ordnance depot and survived by parents four brothers and three sisters along with other relatives.
