Miss Velma Maul a former resident nurse at Frances Shimer college is now Second Lieutenant Maul in the U S Army stationed at Camp Callan California and is eligible for overseas duty. Before leaving Burbank for the camp she was feted by friends in Mt Carroll with Nurse Lavetta Neuschwanenger a Red Cross worker also present awaiting passage to a Pacific station.
Carroll County treasurer Lula M. Ross completed the first distribution of the 1941 tax assessment funds, totaling 196 350 dollars, due to unusually strong spring collections. Disbursements by township include Fairy Haven 7 950, York 9 500, Salem 6 000, Rock Creek 12 000, Lima 2 250, Elkhorn Grove 2 750, Wysox 7 075, Cherry Grove 4 300, Shannon 5 150, Freedom 4 100, Mount Carroll 17 942 5, Woodland 4 600, Washington 2 500, Savanna 20 550.
The Whiteside County Sportsmen's Club schedules a 6 30 pm fish fry Friday April 10 at Morrison municipal building. The event includes an entertainment program and officer elections, a countywide meeting, a reorganization plan, moving pictures music sleight of hand and other acts. 30 minutes of the program will be broadcast over station KROS Clinton. Out of town guests are invited and representatives of the state department of conservation will be present.
Frances Shimer college announces its annual horse show on May 10 at Glengarry horse farm Mt Carroll. College students compete in classes while hackney horses ponies owned by Camp bells and Charles Wrights Midnight Star are shown. Judge will be George Cason Babson Arab farm Grand Detour. They urge farmers to store grain, remodel buildings or buy steel bins, and invite suggestions for 1943 soil building practices.

Carroll county rationing head B L Peck says buses ease transport for ordnance workers in Mt Carroll Lanark and Savanna. Two 12 passenger wagons started last week a 35 passenger bus will join early this month and a 30 passenger bus is planned for Savanna. Each bus will run three round trips daily for all three shifts.
Thirteenth district American Legion convention will be held in Mt Morris on the first or second Saturday in June. Delegations from Carroll Whiteside Jo Daviess Lee Stephenson and Ogle counties will attend. Business sessions in morning and afternoon, followed by a parade in the evening. Blanche Seim spent the weekend at home.
Republicans and Democrats across Cook and other Illinois counties head to the polls Tuesday April 14 to choose party nominees for county and state posts and elect precinct committeemen. In this county five county offices have no candidate filings for the Democrats, while Republicans nominate for most offices with Mell unopposed for superintendent. Five Mount Carroll aldermen are named as defendants in a 270,000 suit filed April 1 in circuit court by Freeport attorneys for Ralph Eaton Norman Smith and Albert Kessler. The cemetery board members seek 10,000 each, citing failure to act on a mandamus suit to obtain cemetery records for audit.
John Freeman a Chadwick area farmer suffered a significant loss last week when two sheep got into a neighbor's corn, became sick and died. Three more became bogged down in mud along a creek and died there. A fine buck sheep was caught in the bow and Saturday Freeman remained unsure if it would survive.
Mayor Rhene B. Law of Savanna ordered the police chief to stop blasting at the Tidredge property on Main Street after a heavy blast damaged windows at the Stransky building and caused serious damage to two parked cars. Earlier blast on March 3 had caused damage.
Gladys Roche, 24, of Mt Carroll escaped serious injury when her car overturned on Route 78 north of Mt Carroll mid Thursday night. The vehicle left the curve, plunged into a ditch, returned to the highway and landed atop the pavement. Roche crawled out, walked to Mt Carroll, and notified the sheriff.
T A Wachtel 73 died of heart attack at home in Mt Carroll after years in monument business and public service. Survived by wife Clara. children Earl, two daughters and a sister and brother. Also Savanna nurse Pearl Paul 49 died suddenly after illness. survived by Warren and Betty, sisters and brothers, with a son and a daughter.
Edward Moffett, 74, of Shannon, was rescued from a burning home by neighbor Harvey Kneiss after smoke billowed from the house last Thursday afternoon. Overcome by smoke, he reentered to save valuables but collapsed. firemen arrived as damage stayed to the lower first floor and stairway.
Two new members will join the Carroll county selective service board, increasing its size to five. Appointees are Robert Coleman of Milledgeville and Thomas Diffenderfer of Lanark. Names were forwarded to Washington for final approval, with duties to begin within days. Existing members include Arthur Reeves of Mt. Carroll as chairman, Ernest Frey of Shannon, and J. R. Sullivan of Savanna.
Charles E. Kingery of Mt. Carroll, county civilian defense chairman, announced several additional council members and a current list of council heads. Names include Fred J. Rhodes as county co-ordinator, Ralph Fahrney salvage chair man, Ernest Rose victory gardens, Sheriff Ray R. West police, Lawrence E. Bruch public relations, Harold A. Hersey fire, Ivan A. Shaver utilities, Dr. E. C. Turner medical, and $. C. Campbell maintenance, all from Mt. Carroll or Savanna.
More than a thousand students from Carroll County and nearby institutions attended the FetH annual Northern Minonia Conference in Sterling on April 9. Bradley college President Frederic R. Hamilton announced the theme What Should High School Seniors Do Now as Lt. Wm. Exton Jr. and John DeLaurenti led discussions on serving the country and career planning amid wartime.
Leland Schmaling played a saxophone solo at Easter services with his mother Mrs Geo Schmaling on piano. Infant baptisms followed for Joyce Elaine Judith Kay and Sandra Lee, daughters of Hook and Morgan couples. Elderly Delia Nipe, over 80, ill after a stroke. Delia frail previously. Guests at various homes over Easter included Morrison and Clinton residents as well as California visitors.
