Warm weather hits Thomson with melon season in full swing at Curley stand north of town run by John and Lila Aterton in its 40th year. Melon growers push harvest despite changes as town buzzes about Fair plans, school work, and a big local baseball game against Savanna.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Ashby and son of Marion Iowa were Sunday dinner guests of Fay Ashby and family. Mrs Lara McGrath visited Algona with Danny and Kay K ness family. Margaret Johnson Aaron and Howard Johnson Lena and others joined various Thomson area hosts for dinners and visits.
Miss Alice Ellen O Connor, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles L O Connor, and Robert Keith Green, son of Mrs Kathryn Green and Russel W Green Sr, married at St Irenaeus Catholic Church Clinton at 10 am Saturday Aug 20. The ceremony featured Rev E J O Hair officiating with organist Mrs Carl Muschall.
The Vacation Bible School will be held at the high school gym Sunday evening August 28 starting at 8 00 pm. Pupils should arrive by 7 45. The public may attend to see the demonstration program and view the children s artwork from the past two weeks.
The church schedule lists services led by Pastor Daniel Goldberg and Pastor Claude Grim. Morning worship at 10:00 a.m., Sunday School at 11:00 a.m., and a Vacation Bible School program at 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the high school gym with no Youth Fellowship that evening. Community Bible Study Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Ladies Aid meets Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Mrs. Jennie Griswold’s home.
Mr and Mrs Robert McClelland announce their daughter Mary Ellen is engaged to Elmer McClain son of Mr and Mrs Eli McClain of Thomson Illinois. No wedding date has been set.
Students and parents are reminded that schools will open on Wednesday August 31 for the new term.
Riverview reports weekend visits and stays by local families. Cedar Rapids guests include Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Barniski and son, and Wayne Wright and family. Davenport and Freeport connections appear with Vesey Johnson and Mrs. Sager. Allen Johnson and Rose Rogers win card club honors. many relatives visit homes and cottages.
Sunday services include Thomson Methodist Morning Worship at 11:00 and Sunday School at 10:00 with a sermon The Know So Christian. Argo Fay hosts Hi MYF at 7:00 p.m. and evening service at the high school gym. Hickory Grove morning service 9:30 with Sunday School at 10:30. Catholic services listed for Fulton at 8:00 and 10:00 and St John’s Savanna services at 5:45 7:30 9:00 and 11:00.
The Holesinger family held a picnic reunion Wednesday evening at the Marvin Holesinger farm near Argo Fay. Guests included Mr and Mrs Jake Vegter and family in Fulton and Mr and Mrs Ned Spencer and family with Kenneth Pearson and sons of Pekin and Mr and Mrs Larry Geerts and family. Emma Haas and Mrs Gene Diephuis and Mark from Fulton joined the gatherings.
Monday through Monday visits include Mr. and Mrs. John Kramer and Nancy with the Matje family in Clinton, and Anna Lee of Clinton visiting Carl Petersen. Others host and travel among Chadwick Mound Harmon Fulton and Hagerstown Maryland with Smith Plumley Long relations and kin.
The report notes Sick Donald Kramer underwent surgery at Savanna City Hospital Monday and was released Tuesday to his mother in law’s home. Laurence Rice remains under observation in Sioux Falls. Charles Bristol was dismissed from Savanna Hospital after an eighty day stay. Henry Young Sr. was discharged from Mercy Hospital after three weeks as a medical patient. Mrs. Mary Johnson was readmitted to Savanna Hospital and remains about the same. Johnny Halfman Jr. of Lanark continues at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago after six weeks. Mrs. Menno Pruis was a Morrison Hospital patient Tuesday to Thursday. William Robertson of Argo Fay is ill at home. Mrs. Gene Marken had surgery at Savanna City Hospital Wednesday and was dismissed Thursday.
Carla Kay Eslinger and Stanley J. Laasch were married at 2 pm Saturday in First Presbyterian Church Clinton with Dr Bruce McCullough officiating. The bride wore Rosepoint lace and silk tulle with a Swedish seed pearl crown. reception followed at Kirk house. couple to reside Burlington after Sept 1.
Funeral services for Mr and Mrs Melvin C Hartman of Fulton who died in a highway crash near Cordova were held today at 2 p m in the First Christian Reformed church Fulton with Rev John L Meppelink officiating A 145 prayer service for immediate families preceded the church service. Burial was in Fulton cemetery. A York Community Church high school class paper drive is planned for Saturday morning August 27 with papers to be placed at the curb and help available if needed.
Sunday callers included Mr. and Mrs. John Slager of Morrison with sister Mrs. Jennie Griswold and Doris Feldt who moved to the Griswold home. Weekend visitors came to Morrison from George Vegter and Martha Witt reunions, Mt. Carroll and Erie guests joined Holesinger and Young families, ham radio picnic drew about 125 at DeWitt, Iowa, and other friends called on Ernest Rathje.
The Thomson Lions Club votes to sponsor a new Explorer Post chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. An organizational meeting is set for Monday August 29 at 7 30 p m in the Methodist Church basement. Invited are boys ages fourteen to seventeen and their parents. A color sound film This Is Exploring will greet attendees.
The twins, a girl and a boy, born to Mr and Mrs Donald Ericksen formerly Jean Elliott, are named Susan Elliott and Peter Elliott. The Ericksons reside in Bensonville Illinois.
A divorce decree is issued divorcing Marjorie M Rutherford from Thomas F Rutherford. The order finalizes the dissolution of the marriage and outlines custody, support, and related arrangements.
Mrs Jennie Geerts and family from Fulton visited Mr and Mrs Leonard Feldt on Tuesday afternoon. A 10 day fishing trip to Hayward Wisconsin is being enjoyed by Lloyd and Cecil Tousley Allan Hickey and Eddie Sterns from Sterling. Mrs Donald Green and her three children from Elkhorn Wisconsin visited with her parents Mr and Mrs Herbert St Ores Sr and Peggy from Wednesday evening to Sunday. Donald Green collected his family on Saturday and they returned home. Mrs Helen Vance and family from DeWitt Iowa visited Saturday evening with Mrs Dolly Atherton and Mr Dwight Atherton and family. Mr and Mrs Merle Atherton Sr were Saturday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Ed McCarthy in Clinton.
At a Carroll county American Legion meeting in Mt. Carroll Fred Cole of Mt. Carroll was installed as county commander for the coming year, succeeding Paul Norman of Savanna. Installing officers included 13th district leaders Paul Severson Winslow Eugene Wolfe Rock Falls and others. Next county meeting set for Lanark September 26.
The Melon Tossers stretched their unbeaten run to 18 straight wins in the Twin State softball league Monday night, led by Traninger’s four shutout innings and two fifth inning singles by the Car Dealers. They now prepare for Beairds and Schuler's doubleheader next week with one makeup game remaining against Bradulski's.
Mr and Mrs Milton Larson and their children moved from Thomson Indiana to Cedar Falls Iowa for the coming year. Mr Larson will attend Iowa State College after receiving a science scholarship. Mrs Larson serves as student director of the Diciples Student Center on campus sponsored by the Society of Christian Churches in Iowa. New address 2310 College St Cedar Falls Iowa.

Patsy Montana America s No 1 Cowgirl will appear at Thomson Melon Day September 6 replacing Beaver Valley Sweethearts. Lions Club volunteers to prep ball diamond for three day celebration as Montana tours radio stage and studio career includes over 5000 appearances.
The Ladies Aid of the Baptist Church meets September 1 at 1 p.m. at Mrs. Jennie Griswold’s home. Kindergarten Club gathers September 2 at 8 p.m. at the Legion Hall. Mothers urged to attend opening day September 6 at 1 30 p.m. Thomson Lions host a steak fry with District Governor Pappie present. Bible Study meets next Wednesday at Mrs. Griswold’s home. T N T Club reports 12 members at Marion Wheeler’s for devotions and a business session with refreshments.
Mrs. Howard Buckley and her son Richard returned home from Dubuque Iowa where he spent the summer with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Leo P. Meyer. Richard was chosen to play third base on the All Star Little League team in Dubuque after a pool of about 500 players.
The Thomson Lions Club purchased Burton Prins's steer at the Savanna 4-H Round-up this week. The animal sold for 25.75 dollars per hundredweight.
The Ford family reunion was held Sunday August 21 at Herbert Blodgett's home in Little York with 43 attendees. A noon picnic, afternoon games, and stunts followed a gift presentation to each family by the hosts. Guests included members from Dixon, Rockford, Aurora, Godfrey, Galesburg, Yates City, Chadwick, Thomson and Savanna. Local attendees listed Mrs. Marion Wheeler of Thomson and Harold Schroth and family of Chadwick.
Mr and Mrs Dwight Atherton and Donald and Charles visited Minn eapolis to honor Leo and his spouse on their wedding anniversary. Capt Don Hansen and family toured Savanna while he starts duties at Uma tilla Depot Hermiston Oregon after serving since August 1944.
County Treasurer Frank L. Ross reminds taxpayers the second installment of real estate tax is due without penalty by Thursday Sept 1. The office will be open Saturday for taxpayers convenience and delinquent taxpayer names will be published in September.

Postmaster and Mrs. Wilbur Reader and daughters enjoy a three week vacation including time in Minnesota. Mrs. Benjamin Thomas of Washington DC visits with brother-in-law Mr. Robert Hil and wife and children. Mrs. Dora Wiebenga stays a few days in Fulton with Howard Wiebengas.
