Churches Back Poor People With Money In Campaign
The Poor People Campaign led by SCLC has won strong backing from national churches, with large donations and churches offering shelter at Resurrection City. Officials say funds may exceed $100,000, while costs and financial details are unclear. The encampment houses about 2,200 residents with thousands more evacuated, mostly Black and poor, amid rain and mud. Food comes from national chains and surplus commodities from USDA, aiding about 8,000 people at a cost near $1 per person per day.
