Auckland Bridge widening clip on cuts cost and time
Auckland's Waitemata harbor bridge, opened in 1959, gains two extra lanes per side using Nippon Clipon girders. Ishikawajima-Harima and British/German/Austrian bids backed the project with THI contract signed in 1966. The plan halves original costs, speeds completion, and traffic on weekdays averages 35,000 vehicles. General manager Owen Brannigan warns widening may still be too small by 1979 for growing Auckland demand.
