Britain vowed to hand power to Indians this year under temporary dominion status, signaling likely partition into Hindu and Moslem states. Indian leaders urged peaceful division, with Punjab and Bengal assemblies set to vote on partition and a boundary commission to split regions if approved.
In Washington and Macon Georgia delegates debated tax policy as Senator Taft urged President Truman to sign the $4 billion income tax cut. Taft argued spending must be trimmed and Congress should steer tax policy or risk higher government costs.
At West Point on June 3 General Dwight D. Eisenhower urged 311 United States Military Academy cadets to lead for world cooperation. He said the true soldier serves as a leader for global security and that national safety requires trust among all peoples and strength of arms. He stressed the cadets' obligation to uphold America's heritage of human dignity and justice, noting no special privileges come with their commissions.
Columbus Manufacturing announces sale of its 47 year old Columbus textile plant to West Point Manufacturing for undisclosed sum. Executive President Joseph Lanier says sale becomes effective after 5 percent of Columbus Mill's shares are submitted. Lanier previously offered to buy in a letter to Columbus President Abbott Turner on May 30. acceptance announced yesterday. The Columbus plant employs 1,200 people and operates 75,000 spindles and 2,209 looms.
Atlanta June 3 AP The state capitol and state office buildings closed for Jefferson Davis birthday. Banks in larger cities stay open Saturday, as the 1947 legislature allowed five day weeks with Saturday openings if a weekday holiday occurred.
New Delhi June 3 AP Fanal Jawaharlal Nehru vice president of India's interim government declared today that the high commands of India's major parties the Moslem League and the Congress Party had accepted a new British government plan for partitioning this sub continent. He said the Sikhs also agreed to accept the plan subject to approval by legislative bodies and the boundary commission to delineate the exact boundaries of the Moslem State of Pakistan.
The Vienna talks on Austria's peace settlement remain deadlocked as experts fail to agree on procedure. Moscow's stance draws doubt about any settlement that would bind Austria to Soviet influence. A Seoul commission seeks a basis for a temporary Korea trusteeship to unify occupation zones.
