President Hoover said efforts in Congress to raise spending would burden the government beyond its means and that prosperity cannot be restored by raids on the treasury. He warned tax increases would fall on farmers and workers and criticized outside groups and political motives driving relief measures.
In Chicago on December 9 a massive blast damaged the American Furniture Mart on Lake Shore Drive. The first floor hole, shattered windows, and torn masonry caused estimated losses of 5 000 to 15 000 dollars. Night custodian Frank Majewicz was knocked off his feet by the explosion. A second bombing hit a grocery and meat market on West Harrison Street, with a powder bomb and about 1 000 dollars in damage. Andrew Trotti blamed competitors amid ongoing police investigations of related cases.

The Bureau of National Homes notes the average age has declined and WWI veterans now make up about 70 percent of residents, with the number of inmates climbing from 12 500–14 000 in 1921–27 to 23 419 in 1929 and 22 908 total with leave.

Five Gary youths were indicted for first degree murder by a grand jury probing the November death of 18 year old Arlene Draves. The suspects are Virgil Kirkland 20 David Thompson 22 Leon Stanford 21 Henry Shirk 21 and Paul Barton 21.
Washington December 9 The Senate debated drought relief as Secretary Hyde pitched a 25 million loan limit for farmers in drought regions. The McNary plan seeking 60 million in relief, including 30 million for food purchases, faced Democratic criticism and calls for larger appropriations and higher taxes to cover costs.
Newport News announced the launch of the President Hoover, hailed as the new queen of the American Merchant Marine. Mrs. Herbert Hoover broke a brine bottle at 11 48 a m, as R Stanley Dollar and Mrs. Dollar joined Mrs. Hoover on the platform. Dollar praised confidence in commerce and noted the ship is the first of four liners to be built by the Dollar Company in coming years amid rumors of a low business mood.
London despatch reports The Daily Xpress branding the Moscow treason trial as a staged show. The editorial argues the charges and proceedings were a fraud designed to shape external opinion and bolster Soviet rulers.

The defense notes an accomplice case involving her husband Leo and his brother Wrank with a trial set for December 16. Prosecutors argued motives include inheritance and attempts to poison family to gain estate and insurance.
