Special ARP Practice Maneuvers Scheduled For Sunday
Chairman Percy L. Sterling of the Winthrop Civilian Defense committee announced a surprise ARP drill for Region 5 personnel including Winthrop. The test will occur Sunday May 23, last up to two hours and forty five minutes, with sirens signaling ARP posts and mock invasion by army troops while State Guard units defend objectives. Local units responded promptly, with 20 incidents reported within 18 minutes of the alert.

1943 Tax Rate Set At $27 Per Thousand
The Board of Assessors led by Chairman William F Abely and members William E Remby and John W Fielding announced a 1943 tax rate of $27.00 per thousand dollars of valuation. This is the town’s lowest rate in eight years, 40 cents lower than last year’s $27.40. Despite a $50 000 war bond purchase from 1942 surplus funds, the levy remains among the lowest in the Commonwealth.
