Memorial Day Parade Route Altered for Town Observance
The annual Memorial Day observances will be held Monday with services at the cemetery. The parade starts at Metcalf square and travels through Hermon, Main, Revere, Shirley, Washington, River roads to the cemetery, then reforming to Madison and Bowdoin streets, ending at the Elk's Clubhouse for a marine service and a joint veterans' collage. Dedicated monuments in Metcalf square will be unveiled before the parade. Lincoln Burofsky is Chief Marshal with George Brockman and Alfred Fearing in leadership.

Public Demonstrations On Home Canning In Winthrop
Miss Juliette Myren of the Massachusetts State College University Extension Service will give two canning demonstrations in Winthrop next Wednesday June 2 at 2 15 pm in the high school gym and lunch room and at 8 pm before the Winthrop Hebrew Ladies Auxiliary gathering at the Winthrop Community Building Shirley Street. Citizens plan to honor Harold French Jr with a dedication of the square on the old Narrow Gauge depot site. French, radioman first class USN, died Feb 18 near Newfoundland aboard USS Truxton. He was the son of Mr and Mrs French of 183 Winthrop Street, with brother Lawrence also in the Navy.

Citizens learn Tuesday that Rapid Transit Inc. altered routes due to a Office of Defense Transportation order curtailing gasoline use. By Wednesday regular routes were restored except 9:30 am to 4 pm service, with further cuts possible. Selectmen held talks with the company about the sudden changes and planned adjustments to save miles while aiding the war effort.

Joint Installation Held At Baptist Church
The William J Day Baraca and Littlefield-Philathea Classes held a joint officer installation Sunday evening May 28. State Union officers led the service with Rev A Forshee giving the address. William Cray received the second state award in a statewide contest from Edward Johnson. State officers present included Mrs Dorothy Snow and Mrs Mava B Pine. The ceremony featured a candlelight culmination and Baraca pin presentation to Rev Forshee. A Class photo and closing spring session are planned for May 30 with all Baracas invited to attend.

The Edith Wood Unit Citizens entertainment committee visited the Station Hospital Camp Miles Standish Taunton and staged a show on May 21 at the Coast Guard Station Bourne Barracks Buzzards Bay. The troupe performed again Tuesday evening at Camp Edwards Otis Field.

Farewell Reception Planned for Rev. Harry Hill
The Rev. Harry Belmont Hill, pastor of First Church of Winthrop Methodist for eight years, has been transferred to Malden Center Methodist Church by Bishop G Bromley Oxnam. Under his leadership membership grew from 750 to over 1000 and the debt fell from 69000 to 22000. A farewell reception for Hill and his family is set for Tuesday June 1 at 8 p m in the Assembly Hall. Rev Laurence W C Emig will succeed Hill and preach on Sunday May 30.
