At a March 21 1939 school committee meeting C J Thayer was unanimously elected principal of Winthrop Senior High School. Thayer, 39, from Evergreen Louisiana, has seven years as sub master of Everett High and many leadership roles in local and national education groups. He holds an A B from Louisiana College 1920 and a Master of Education from Harvard 1925, with advanced doctoral work planned.

Day of Recollection Planned for March 30
The Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club schedules its annual day of recollection at Cenacle Convent Brighton on Thursday March 30. Mass begins at 9am and benediction at 430pm with Rev Edward A Sullivan S J from St Mary’s Boston delivering conferences. A tenth anniversary program is set and bus reservations close Monday March 27.

Co operative Banks Show Definite Gain
The headquarters of the Massachusetts Co operative Bank League at 80 Federal St reports a definite gain in mortgage loans by cooperative banks in February over January. The findings show 75 percent of banks with increases in home mortgages versus a year ago.

Funeral services for Annie M. Homer
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie M. Homer of 120 Main Street were held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist with Rev. John T. Sullivan celebrant. The 72 year old widow of Edward H. Homer had moved to Winthrop in 1907 from Revere and helped run Homer Candy Company with her sons Francis E. and Edward H. Homer. She also leaves son John J. Homer of San Gabriel California sister Mrs. Catherine Howard of Dorchester 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren Pallbearers included Homer Haberland Roy Haberland Edward H. Homer III and Robert E. Homer Burial was in Winthrop Cemetery.

Chinese Themed Guest Night At Winthrop Young Woman's Club
More than three hundred members and guests attended the Young Woman's Club of Winthrop annual Guest Night at Elk's Hall on March 16. Karl H. Robinson set a Chinese atmosphere with lanterns and Cantonese imagery for his lecture Reflections of China in the American Mirror. Mrs. Berkeley W. Mossman led a reception with officers and honored guests in formal gowns, while greetings from the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs were read.

Town Salaries Debated at Adjourned Monday Meeting
The Advisory Committee proposal to cut salaries faced heated debate as town officials resisted reductions. After rounds of votes and a motion to trim the town treasurer’s pay, the meeting adjourned with five articles discussed and the remaining forty more on the warrant postponed to next Monday evening in the Junior High gym.
