The Winthrop Flower and Property Owners Club urges residents to plant Rosa Rugosa as the town flower. The shrub withstands salt air and cold winds, blooms pink from June to October, and bears red fruit in fall. It forms screens and enhances parks, churches, and golf courses. April is planting time. orders go through chairman Roy Pigeon or Garden Clubs.
Commodore George J. Hamilton of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club receives a letter from Governor Saltonstall notifying his appointment as a delegate to the Thirty-Fourth Convention of the National Rivers and Harbors Congress in Washington DC on March 23-24, 1939. The nomination comes on the suggestion of Commissioner William F. Callahan, Massachusetts Bay Yacht Clubs.
The Woman's Foreign Missionary Auxiliary of the Methodist Church marks its 20th anniversary with a Sunday evening service at 7 30 in the Winthrop Methodist Church. Mrs Howard M LeSourd of Newton will speak, accompanied by a vested choir and organ solo, with congregational singing led by Mrs Leland G Floyd.
Fred Gardner Smith, ex Advisory Committee member, was chosen chairman of the Winthrop Board of Cemetery Commissioners at a meeting held last week.
A testimonial dinner will be given to Walter G. Baker chairman of the Board of Selectmen. The event will be at Odd Fellows Hall next Wednesday evening March 22. Tickets are one dollar.
The regular monthly meeting of the Directors of the Hospital Aid of Winthrop Community Hospital was held on March 9, 1939 with 12 members present. The Purchasing Committee was authorized to purchase various supplies. A food sale was planned for March 25 at Belcher's Flowers Shop under chairmanship of Mrs. Arthur Gibby. Thirteen items were mended and twenty four new articles were handed in.

The annual town meeting will be held Monday in the Junior high gym to consider 45 articles including department budget requests. The Advisory Committee predicts a tax rate rise to about 29.75, a peak aided by planned borrowing unless recommendations are adopted. Salaries for town officials may be cut, sparking debate as the meeting aims to curb the rate before reaching thirty dollars.
The Cottage Park Yacht Club seeks to expand its fleet in Winthrop with radio boats financed through Willis J. Reid & Sons boatyard. The plan, officially linked to Pleasant Park Yacht Club, invites members to participate and promote recruitment for the club's special offer.
Winthrop faced its worst March storm in the century as heavy snow blanketed streets. The Street Department kept plows running, traffic slowed but remained passable, and trains ran with a few hours disruption when a pole fell. High tides and winds caused surf and road washouts from Shirley Gut to Deer Island, stranding pumping plant workers.
