Boston fire officials begin an inspection of the department to assess efficiency and the scarcity of modern apparatus. The chief notes the review will extend another week to ten days, aiming to quiet citizens’ fears and clarify the investigation.
The First Church of Winthrop begins a fundraising drive to finance a new edifice. A barn fire at 396 Winthrop Street threatened Magee Corner as firefighters tried to control hay and grain flames. Dr. Divine will lead a campaign program with prayer, sermons, and a March 22 to 24 schedule.
The senior choir of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Winthrop, under organist Herbert Sheehan and Pastor Rev. Father O'Brien, will present a Palm Sunday program. A 30-voice choir drawn from Handel and Haydn Society will perform a Passion sequence from Processional to Crucifixion with excerpts from Gounod.
Winthrop Chelsea and Revere vote to empower Chairman Henry J. Barry to arrange for joining Middlesex County in building and maintaining a tuberculosis hospital. The trio forms a Tubercular Hospital District outside Boston and must provide local care for patients, shifting from Rutland to Middlesex County as urged by Dr. Geo H. Bigelow.
The chief of police annual report shows automobile law violations rose from 31 arrests in 1927 to 62 last year. Total arrests: 301 (males 291 females 10) last year versus 294 (281 males 13 females) in 1927. Liquor law arrests fell by two. drunkenness declined from 160 to 115. Property stolen totaled 14262.25 last year, with 12581.70 recovered, versus 13334.86 stolen and 10468.71 recovered in 1927. Auto thefts rose from 20 to 31. Overall crime near 1927 levels.
At the town meeting on Monday evening, voters elected five citizens to the Planning Board for 1929. Edward G. Richardson Howard A. Gilson and Chester O'Donnell were reappointed as the three continuing members, with Frank Bauer and P. Fletcher joining as new appointees.
Henry W. Wilson of 12 Prescott Street was appointed to the Board of Cemetery Commissioners by the Board of Selectmen Wednesday evening to fill the vacancy caused by John B. Tewksbury’s resignation who has become Cemetery Superintendent. Wilson, secretary and Merchants Fruit and Produce Company official of Boston, is well-known locally and regarded as qualified to ensure efficient administration.
At an evening session in the Junior High Gym, Winthrop voters appropriated 795 006 17 for municipal expenses in 1923. Budget and special appropriations totaled 675 655 13 and 119 351 04 with 103 000 00 for water department, balance 14 387 43. Fifty eight articles were disposed in about three hours, a record for swift town business.
