Legion Carnival Opens in Ingleside Three Days
Winthrop Post 146 American Legion launches a three day carnival to celebrate the Fourth with a midways, concerts, races, boxing, merry go round, air plane show, watermelon and pie eating contests, treasure hunts, and a grand Fourth fireworks display. Free ice cream and a 1939 Chevrolet Coach gift award are among highlights. Admission is free all three days.

School Heating Contract Awarded to Acme Heating
The Center school boiler system project was awarded to Acme Heating and Ventilating Company for 2292 dollars after a 2500 dollar appropriation was approved at the March town meeting. Other bids ranged from 2350 to 3900 with enginee ring fees about ten percent of bid cost to R. D. Kimball Company.

Glee Club Annual Picnic At Osterville
The Glee Club of the Young Women's Club held its annual picnic at Mrs Esther Nelsons summer home in Osterville on June 25. Twenty four members and families attended despite cold wet weather. They walked the woods admired flowers and sang indoors in the afternoon with Swede Nelson contributing a fine tenor. A pair of hurricane lamps was presented to Mrs Nelson in gratitude for hosting the summer gatherings.

Republicans Sail Set For July 13
More than 1500 members of the Massachusetts Republican Club and the Young Republicans of Massachusetts plan the third annual Moonlight Sail aboard the S. S. Steel Pier at Foster's Wharf. The cruise leaves at 8 30 p m on Thursday July 13 and travels through the outer harbor up along the North Shore with Robert E Kirby and Mrs Grace Lithgow of Winthrop assisting the committee.

A school committee awarded the town heating coal contract to the Metropolitan Coal Company as the second lowest bidder. Ta Mahaney Retires After 53 Years of Town Service
Timothy J. Mahaney retires this week as a Winthrop town official ending a long career in fire and town departments. He served as Fire Chief Building Inspector Superintendent of Streets and planning board member among many roles since starting in 1886 with the fire department. His work modernizing the Street Department and handling blizzards, plus fuel duty during World War years, are noted with high regard.
