Intellectual Tolerance Stressed to Graduates

Chairman Everett H. Lane of the School Committee addressed Winthrop Senior High School Class of 1939 at Miller Field. He urged intellectual tolerance and free thought, praising parents and teachers for their sacrifices that laid the foundation for future achievement as 266 graduates received diplomas on a perfect June evening.

U S Engineers Select Boston for Atlantic Air Terminal

Congress approved funds to enlarge U S airport facilities with three trans Atlantic bases. Boston is chosen as one base alongside Baltimore and possibly New York. Estimated total cost stands at seven million dollars with two point three million allocated Monday to War Department engineers.

Selectmen oppose payment to bankrupt Narrow Gauge

The selectmen say no payment will be approved until the railroad’s exact status is clearly understood. Walter G. Baker chairs the board and commented to the metropolitan press that the town’s $15,000 appropriation to keep the railroad operating requires full scrutiny before any disbursement.

Veterans Flower Day Set for June 23 Campaign

Gov Winthrop Post No 1 of the United American Veterans urges public support for Flower Day on June 23 to raise funds for a camp for under privileged children. The First National Bank acts as trustee. Boston Post conducted a similar drive June 16 17. Winthrop Post targets June 28 with representatives at stations and prominent town sites.

Congregationalists to Have New Pastor in Winthrop Mass

Newcastle New Hampshire June 19 Rowland C Adams pastor of the Congregational Church here has resigned to accept the pastorate of the Congregational Church at Winthrop Massachusetts His resignation becomes effective July 31 and he will assume duties August 1 It is his first regular pastorate having previously held a student pastorate at South Natick Massachusetts

Harbor Pollution Rife. Town Faces $248,634 Cost

A report by the Special Recess Commission recommends a $24,717,000 Boston Harbor pollution control program. It urges three sewage treatment plants on Deer Island Nut Island and Moon Island, financed by 40 year bonds and with 45 percent federal grant.
