In God We Trust Becomes U S Coin Inscription

The inscription In God We Trust was placed on U S coinage after Salmon P. Chase recommended it during Lincoln's administration. It first appeared on 1863 pattern coins, then on two cent pieces from 1864, with later use expanding from 1866. The 1907 Saint Gaudens $10 and $20 gold coins briefly omitted the motto, drawing unfavorable comment before quick restoration.
