Members and friends of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club plan a ladies night at the clubhouse on Pleasant Street this Friday to celebrate the night before the Fourth. Commodore George J. Hamilton and his committee organize entertainment for the ladies replacing the club’s usual stag party with expectations of a large attendance.

Winthrop Woman Burned To Death

Elizabeth T. McCarthy, 68, of 57 Read St., Winthrop, died after her clothing caught fire near a lighted burner in her kitchen. Neighbors alerted police and firemen as flames burned from her attire. death attributed to possible fainting or heart attack with police and medical examiner to determine exact cause. She lived in Winthrop over 40 years, widow of Archibald McCarthy, with two sons Archibald and Frank.

Sewer Repairs On Pleasant Street Near Completion

Winthrop motorists will welcome news from Superintendent John Kennedy that reconstruction of the broken sewer on Pleasant Street near Lincoln is finished and the highway will reopen to traffic by Thursday or Friday this week. The report notes several weeks of work and a continuation on page 8.

Henry J. Barry Ill After Operation At Community Hospital

Henry J. Barry secretary of the Advisory Committee and former town counsel is critically ill at Community Hospital after a recent operation. He has suffered months of illness with a prior operation about a year and a half ago and was on the road to recovery before this setback. The community joins in wishing him a speedy and complete recovery.

Homer Seeks Republican State Senate Seat in First Suffolk

Edward H. Homer of Winthrop announces entry for State Senator in the First Suffolk District including Chelsea Revere Winthrop and Saugus. He will seek the Republican nomination in September primaries as nomination papers circulate with broad support. Homer has lived in Winthrop 29 years and is described as well known and well liked.

Carnival Opens At Ingleside Park In Winthrop

The annual Carnival of Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion runs Thursday to Saturday at Ingleside Park. Events include amateur contest boxing wrestling a band concert games rides and a fireworks display. Ten percent of proceeds go to Winthrop Community Hospital.

Retired Here As Postmaster David Belcher Steps Down

David Belcher, longtime postmaster of the local office, resigned this week under the government retirement act after thirty years in the post and forty-two years with the postal service. He followed his father in the role, guiding rapid growth and earning a high suburban office ranking.
