Suffolk Downs opens its 1936 summer meeting with 53 racing days and eight races daily through August 14. Rain and mist did not deter a large crowd as Allen Wilson promises attractive cards and top track performers at the East Boston track.
Members of the P. A. L. Club enjoyed their annual picnic at Peterboro New Hampshire on Wednesday June 10. Mrs. Alice Simpson a past president welcomed guests to her summer home and extended a cordial greeting to all.
On Saturday afternoon June 6 the 4 Foreign Mission Club held its sixteenth annual reunion at the Cliff House Winthrop Highlands. The American Baptist Foreign Mission Society founded in 1802 moved headquarters several times before settling in New York City in 1920. The club, now including members from other Baptist groups, has hosted at Cliff House for two years. This year thirty members attended. the group totals sixty five and mails letters in reply to each year’s roll call. A letter from Rev James H Franklin D D former FO Secretary and now President of Crozier is read.
The Shirley Street school rebuilding committee announced the selection of Lloyd A. Patrick of 157 Circuit Road as clerk of the works to act for the committee and town. Patrick, a well known local with over twenty five years in the architectural field, began the duties this week.
The Winthrop Chapter American Red Cross met in the Selectmen's Room Town Hall on Wednesday evening June 10 with Mrs Carl S Floyd presiding. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. A letter from Mr Edward was read.
Despite bad weather the Pleasant Park Yacht Club Zam B ola drew a large crowd over Friday night and Saturday showing midway yacht races and speed boat rides. Ruth McKenna of Revere won a General Electric refrigerator on Saturday night. Commodore George J. Hamilton and officers thank all who helped ensure the event's success.
The June News Letter from the State Department of Education praises Winthrop Junior High School and Highland School for well trained patrol boys. The patrol leaders use horizontal arm signals to halt traffic and guide students safely across sidewalks.
Free summer program run by Winthrop Schools under Superintendent Edward R. Clarke offers Public Speaking instruction and speech correction for foreign born residents. Friday discussions cover Current Events and Poetry Analysis from 2:30 to 5 p.m., with a Dramatic Club meeting for 16 plus on June 22 at 2:30 p.m. Private lessons available by registration at Edward B. Newton School or by calling Ocean 1955-M.
Thieves entered Walter G. Baker's garage at Main and Pleasant streets late Wednesday night and stole about twenty five dollars then set fire to the storage area. The blaze, discovered at 11 45 p m, burned for over an hour but was finally controlled. Baker arrived early and found the cash register empty. A thorough search found no trace of the missing money.
A portrait of the late George H. Gibby was presented at the high school graduation in Winthrop. Mrs. Gibby donated the portrait in memory of her husband who chaired the Committee on Increased School Accommodations from 1922 to 1932, overseeing Junior High School construction and additions. Gibby died March 30 1933 leaving 2000 in trust for the Junior High School.
Winthrop Chapter De Molay held a Dad and Sons Night at the Masonic Temple Monday with a dinner six film reels and a lively program. Advisory Dad Dick White and Advisory Board Chair N Elliot Willis led the event assisted by Harrison Myrick George Douglas and others. Contests featured ice cream banana fritters and olives with awards to Robert Walker Roger Steward and Douglas Bradshaw among others. White offered a free ambulance ride and six motion picture reels capped the evening with a bowling finish.
The text notes a correction to the high school graduation awards stating the J. Newton Esdaile prize was misread as two dollars and confirms the correct amount is ten dollars. The REVIEW is glad to make the correction.
About 600 Winthrop World War II veterans received baby bonus bonds as $1.6 billion in bonds were distributed nationwide by the Treasury Department. Postmaster Belcher said the distribution here ran 5 30 p m to 10 30 p m with few returns. most veterans were home to greet carriers. Some veterans at Fort Banks received bonds from the base hospital distribution.
