Board of Assessors Chairman Frank W Tucker reports Winthrop’s population did not shrink, but rose with 788 adults moving in last year. The Street List details newcomers by precinct, countering calamity claims and illustrating broad in state and out of state migration.
The Board issues new Street Lists with an alphabetical index to help locate streets easily, a improvement over previous years for quicker reference.
At a Wednesday evening meeting between the Board of Selectmen and the Library Trustees held on the library grounds, officials discussed widening the corner and cutting a strip off the Hermon area as work on sidewalks and landscaping progresses.
Frank J. Downs of 17 Girdlestone road and a junior high graduate won Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion cup for best all around scholastic ability. Adjutant George W. Downie presented the cup before the junior high students.
The carnival features the First Corps Cadet Band to boost the day and evening events. Activities include a children’s sports program and a Fourth of July at home plan, with sale items available from Post members or local stores.
Nearly one hundred thousand spectators expected to line the grounds and witness the greatest speed boats ever as Winthrop hosts a record chaser event. The town promotes a spectacular program unmatched in local boating history and calls for public invitation.
The last Board of Trade meeting for the summer months was held. Members gathered to discuss seasonal matters and wrap up before the recess.
Final services were held last Sunday as members and friends gathered to pass the old church building destined for replacement by a new edifice. Rev. Charles S. Otto recalled past incidents while the $20,000 needed to begin work was noted and the union of church officials offered space for Sunday School use 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for summer months.
Spectators lined the parade route as the Suffolk County Drum and Bugle Corps from 21 Legion Posts joined the June 17 procession. Crowds cheered as the corps marched along, highlighting community support for veterans and local units.
