The Non Partisan League opens their Outing Headquarters at 14 Hermon Street opposite the Winthrop Town Hall for registration of children and automobiles for a Pleasant Pond outing at Wenham. Town officials residents and press praise the league for the event.
Senior Class Day exercises were held Tuesday afternoon June 13 at 2 30 p m in the Winthrop Theatre. The program featured a class history dream boat ballad and a two act operetta Riding Down the Sky with High School Orchestra led by N Eliot Willis and Miss Theresa Key. Class officers include President John Van Dalinda and Marshal Charles E Reed Jr. The event closed with Alma Mater and Corcoran Cadets marching to the audience.
The Geo H Russell Auxiliary was honored at the United Spanish War Veterans Auxiliary State Convention in Lowell on June 9 and 17 for achieving the greatest AVENER wait of membership during the past fiscal year. The award included a substantial check.
A Friday night storm struck two houses on Moore Street and damaged a vacant home at 57 Moore Street. Fire alarms activated at box 9 on Vonage as high winds toppled trees and scattered debris along the Lown area.
Town readers are invited to the Elks Charity Carnival at the Elks grounds Thursday Friday and Saturday. Old King Fun and Queen Mirth headline a festive lineup with music, dancing and a mystery prize for Miss North Shore. The event boasts a release of joy and laughter for all ages with contests and a grand prize cup.
Pleasant Park Yacht Club hosts a highly successful annual Zam-Bola with flags, music, a ferris wheel and midway entertainment from 1 30 PM to midnight. A General Electric refrigerator prize was awarded to Mrs Elizabeth White of 41 Marshall Street, with Commodore George J. Hamilton and club officers expressing thanks to all helpers.
A June 29 parade in the town drew families and women enjoying the sight of children at play. The event supported the Elks Charity, with autos and flags parade through the streets, promising continued coverage on later pages.
Fred J Hogan a Winthrop retiree and registered druggist was elected president of the Traveling Men’s Association at its three day convention ending at the New Ocean House Swampscott. He works as a salesman for McKesson Eastern Drug Co. of Boston and travels Massachusetts Maine and New Hampshire.
Winthrop Elks observed Flag Day with a march from Ellis home to Metcalf Square led by the Winthrop Legion Post Band. A large civic procession included Fort Banks Marines, several veterans groups, youth organizations, Women’s clubs, and yacht clubs with the massed colors.
Winthrop Firemen's Relief Association and Ladies Auxiliary held armed memorial services for departed members. Led by President Joh Wolana wal, the procession marched from Central River Station to Winthrop Cemetery, placed flags on markers, and held short exercises at the Firemen's Memorial, then proceeded to the Methodist Episcopal Church for services led by Rev Dro Oscar Ford.
A campaign led by Police Chief McNeill targets speeding in Winthrop. The effort includes a daytime road stop resulting in 22 offenders arrested, six of them women, and over 75 motorists halted.
In Tuesday’s local election 2445 voted for repeal of the eighteenth amendment and 144 against. The town favored wine and malt beverages by 2171 to 657. Turnout was about 40 percent with 3215 ballots cast of 8678 registered. Precincts showed clear divisions with Highlands voting for repeal and Precinct 5 remaining dry. Overall results suggest a shift away from prohibition in recent years.
Darien firm Fown-Counsel Terrille filed with the Superior Court an answer to the Bill of Complaint against the Health Board over a marriage contract awarded to the highest bidder. The answer denies bad faith and coercion as alleged. No hearing date has been set.
Twenty-four new names were added to a voting list during a special Board of Registrars session from noon to 10:00 PM Friday for the state election on Thursday.
