Cemetery Commissioners vote to abolish the superintendent of cemetery post. Hugh Roberts had resigned to take the job and the office will cease as of June 1. Fred Burns is named caretaker to supervise all cemetery work. Chairman Sargeant cites financial conditions and economy as the reason.
President Robert Millen announces a two pronged effort by the Winthrop Swimming Association formerly the Winthrop Beach Raft Association. A large new member drive begins July first with a concurrent Save-A-Life campaign aiming to double membership this year.
Miss Lavicy Irwin of 16 Lincoln Street was badly injured last Saturday when thrown through the windshield of a roadster after skidding and striking a parked truck. She suffered a fractured skull and severe ear injury. Albert Kevorkian of Newton Center and Thomas Carnicelli of Wilthrop were among her visitors at Community Hospital.
Voters may register this Friday at the Town Hall from 2:00 PM until closing for the special State election next Tuesday June 13th. Massachusetts and Win throp residents will vote on repealing the eleventh amendment.
The Rev. Herbert S. Johnson will speak at the Sunday evening service at Methodist Church on My Experiences in Czechoslovakia. A National Economy League speaker, he is listed in Who's Who in America and noted for Congo reform work and Red Cross service.
Hundreds of Wenham children await June 25 outing at Pleasant Pond. Non-Partisan League Move Forward plans a Sunday picnic inviting all townspeople regardless of race creed or color. Car owners in Winthrop are asked to provide transportation, with Arthur M. MacCarthy expressing strong confidence in community support.
The Vested Choirs of First Church of Winthrop M E present the second annual festival in the church auditorium Thursday evening June 15 at 7 30. About 1300 voices from the Junior-Intermediate Young Peoples Senior Choirs of Men and Boys directed by Carle W Malley will perform works by Bach Handel Haydn Beethoven Brahms Gounod Franck and others. The Young Woman's Glee Club led by Jeannette Floyd will sing God in Nature Father We Thank Thee and The Long Day Closes with soloists Harry Newcombe Caroline Piotti Theo Carreiro and Sara Atkins. A banquet for the choirs at 6 o clock precedes the service.
Commodore George J. Hamilton and the Pleasant Park Yacht Club invite Winthrop families and residents to a special opening event tomorrow. The notice emphasizes community welcome and a festive gathering at the yacht club grounds.
Winthrop Council, K of C, elected officers on Wednesday evening. All current officers were reelected except the Chancellor position, filled by Frank O Malley. Deputy Grand Knight James Corbett retires, to be replaced by Frank Brugman. A summer outing is planned for July or August at Pleasant Pond, Wenham, and a women’s night is set for June 21 at St John’s Hall with four vaudeville acts and dancing. James J Downes chairs the planning committee.
Assessors completed street listing and census work. printers will publish books by June 15. Limited copies at fifty cents, containing names for street list, military service eligibility, old age assistance tax table, and dog licenses. Ten workers toiled three weeks. two clerks and assistant spent nearly two months organizing data. Population stands at 17,224, an increase of 185 from last year.
The Winthrop Garden Club held its first annual meeting at Mrs. Fred G. Curtis's home. President Grace W. Gove reviewed annual reports and new business, including the June 20 luncheon at the Cliff House and a flower show. A September show aims to invite amateur gardeners. The program featured a talk by Mrs. William E Remby on raising perennials from seed and a member exchange of plants and bulbs.
Polls will be open here from 1 to 8 P.M for the special election on repealing the eighteenth amendment. Voting will occur at the same polling places as in prior elections.
Suffolk Superior Court refused to issue an injunction blocking the Board of Health from completing a garbage contract. Julius Stone represents Winthrop residents in a suit alleging the contract to the highest bidder caused a $6600 two year loss to the town. Town Counsel Darien Terrille given a week to demur and answer the bill.
Dr Tehyi Hsieh a prominent Chinese statesman diplomat economist and publicist shared a vivid China portrait at a Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association meeting He described China and its culture its people aims and hopes and warned that Japanese aggression could shift global power If Japan is unchecked he said a China Russia India alliance could form to promote peace and balance in the region
Vice commander J Francis Rogers reports full swing for the annual Legion Carnival to be held at Ingleside Park during the Fourth of July holiday. Enthusiasm runs high with many Post members involved and a grand prize of a new Master Chevrolet Coach awarded to the lucky ticket holder after the event.
In Tuesday's election on repeal voters will mark ballots for dry or wets delegates. Each group has three names and voters must place an X beside all three names in the chosen group or the ballot is void. A vote for repeal requires X marks against all three repeal‑pledged delegates.
Haxamaxa appears at the Elks Carnival set for June 15 16 and 17 in Winthrop. Exalted Ruler Kirby and Chairman Austin McCormark lead a large committee promising a big, joyous charity event at the Club House and Elks grounds on Washington Avenue with dancing and prizes.
At a town meeting chaired by Frederic J. Muldon the committee to revise building laws elected Harry H. Sawtel as chairman and James Herbert as secretary. Other members are David McInnes Timothy J. Mahaney M F Grimes and John B Kennedy. Next meeting set for June 15.
Henry G Roberts has been appointed to the police vacancy created by the death of Channing McDonald. A longtime resident of over twenty five years, he is a local school graduate who served eighteen months with the Machine Gun Company in France, attended Huntington Prep and Suffolk Law Schools, is married with one child, and lives at 45 Beal Street.
