The Winthrop Community Hospital board votes to delay the final completion campaign from June 21 to September 15 due to business conditions season and technical issues. They will devote the summer to public education and pursuing remaining 1925 pledges, with over 1250 unpaid. A cornerstone laying is planned as a major event.
Announcement by Chairman Frank K Hatfield of the Tercentenary Committee says over 40 Governors Mayors and other officials will attend the Winthrop parade on August 2. Gov Trumbull of Connecticut will fly to attend. Lexington Minute Men FUSELIERS Salem Light Infantry Assoc and a Navy Yard detachment join. Over 300 Shriners with band and patrols march. Floats division expected large with 35 organizations already applying. Suburban Gas & Electric among applicants.
Under Mrs. Alice S Farquhar chairing the Winthrop Community Hospital Aid Association the Hospital Baby Show nears June 21 with over 200 babies registered and more entries expected at the hospital.
Mrs F L of 25 Harborview avenue was passenger rescued from the Steamship Fairfax after the collision with the Oil Tanker Pinthis off Scituate that caused the tanker to explode and sink. Mrs Gilbert was en route to Richmond Virginia when the accident occurred. A life preserver was donned promptly. A social tea followed last Sunday afternoon June 8 hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of George H Russell Camp at the Machine Gun Veteran's Hall.
Flag Day events proceed Saturday June 14 at 3:00 PM with a parade from Metcalf Square led by the Winthrop Legion Drum and Bugle Corps to Elks Hall on Washington Avenue. Principal speaker will be Arthur W. Sullivan Probate registrar at 3:30 PM with a Loom presentation as a feature.
Swett's Market on Woodside avenue added a full service bakery this week with new ovens and two specialized bakers. E. Camille van Dooren, former chef to King Albert of Belgium, will supervise the bakery opening.
Local historian Frank W. Tucker will speak on Early Church Going in Winthrop during the 10:45 a m Sunday service at St. John’s Episcopal Church. The address augments the church Tercentenary program.
Senate action follows talks between Chairman Tibbetts and New England Telephone and Telegraph on upgrading lighting on Winthrop Shore Drive and replacing the Highlands railroad bridge. Proposals include underground wiring from Revere Street to Magee’s Corner and on Winthrop Street, with timing tied to Tercentenary plans. The Metropolitan District Commission will weigh these options.
The statement from Congressman Underhill issued through his secretary George N. Norton says the congressman has passed the crisis of his illness and is on the road to recovery. He will be confined for three to four weeks and require absolute rest after discharge. The record cites exhaustion from a strenuous session and heavy duties including Soviet investigations as the cause of the collapse.
The First Church of Winthrop Methodist Episcopal held final dedicatory exercises Sunday. Bishop John W. Hamilton praised Dr. C. Oscar Ford and the congregation as they celebrated a fully subscribed building fund of $225,000 for the church temple.
A town complaint alleges aliens are favored for labor in town departments, citing three longtime street workers Timothy Foley Robert Bean and John Farrons as laid off. The complainant Edward Belcher claims such practice violates state labor laws and that aliens access may block American citizens from town jobs. Street superintendent Timothy J Mahaney denies policy prejudice noting the laid off men were dependable and recounts a cycle of workers leaving for better pay, complicating department stability.
Mr. G. W. Sully of the National Cash Register Co. Dayton Ohio spoke at the monthly Board of Trade meeting in the Town Hall Tuesday. He outlined new ideas to assist merchants in their business focusing on better goods merchandise and personnel advertising departmentizing and organization for merchant success. President Frank F. Swett presided.
A letter from the Winthrop Machine Gun Veterans Association to Winthrop Post No. 146 offers use of the Machine Gun building on Jefferson Street during the Legion building addition. The gesture strengthens long standing cooperation between the two groups.
Many members of the George H. Russell Camp No. 65 U S W V plan to attend the thirty second convention of the Department of Massachusetts U S W V at Fram St Frances Pt 330 at 2 oclock. Members should be at the Blockhouse before these hours.
