Sir Thomas Lipton of London donates a Challenge Cup for Winthrop’s Tercentenary Yachting Regatta to be held August 30 to September 1. The Lipton Cup must be won three consecutive years. Lipton cannot attend the event.
The Winthrop Community Hospital Aid Association announces a baby show Saturday afternoon, June 21, at the Junior High School Hall. Eligible are all babies born at the Community Hospital age 3% years or under. Prizes are bank books with small deposits to foster thrift. Out-of-town doctors and nurses will judge based on health rather than looks.
Ex selectman J Stewart Carr veteran telegrapher in Boston and New York financial districts and longtime First Methodist Episcopal Church of Winthrop official died suddenly at his home 135 Grovers Avenue Winthrop Highlands. Funeral services were held at the church new edifice with Masonic and Elks rites and burial at Winthrop Cemetery. Rev Dr C Oscar Ford officiated with Hammatt Lodge Masons and Winthrop Lodge Elks in attendance. The procession included Winthrop Commandery K T and Hammatt Lodge Masons escorts.
The dedication of the new flag pole and tablet on the Town Hall grounds will take place on June 12 at 8:00 PM. The ceremony is organized by the Tercen tenary Committee with invitations extended to all citizens.
Final Literary Digest Poll figures show Winthrop leaning toward repeal with 334 votes, while 220 favored enforcement and 161 backed modification. A total of 715 ballots were cast in the town.
Physicians at Naval Hospital said Representative Underhill of Massachusetts was improving and his condition was not regarded as serious. Underhill entered the hospital for observation and rest after an attack of indigestion.
Winthrop Council of the Knights of Columbus elected Wm H Walpole as Grand Knight for the coming year. His term starts July 1 after Jos J Monahan retires following six years of service. Walpole previously served as financial secretary and treasurer.
Winthrop’s Metcalf Square Methodist church was formally dedicated with a large service led by Bishop William F. Anderson and Rev. C. Oscar Ford. The building includes a 12 member choir, organ, and a 20 seat kneeling space, plus a Seavey Memorial Chapel and multiple classrooms. A campaign seeks 75000 for immediate completion, with pledges planned for one year.
A Sunday gale caused widespread damage with trees uprooted or broken along Bartlett road Locust street and Cottage Park road. An oak about 75 years old fell at Bartlett road narrowly missing a car, a chestnut damaged a house at 135 Locust street, and a Woolworth window on Winthrop street shattered. Water and telephone wires were knocked out and yachts derelict off Cottage Park and Winthrop Yacht Clubs.
The Murray Family concert lights Elks Hall this Friday evening June 6 featuring J. K. Murray and family with Mrs. Clara Lane Murray as accompanist. The program spans ballads concert and operatic numbers, highlighting the varied repertoire and concluding with further pieces from Mrs. Murray’s compositions.
