Veterans from the town held Memorial Sunday exercises at Temple of the Tifereth Israel on Shirley Street after a parade from Metcalf Square. Cantor H. L. Masovetsky led the service and Rabbit Goldschmit of Roxbury gave a notable address urging tolerance and truth to combat world distrust.
Winthrop veterans with local officials and townspeople held Memorial Day activities. The Winthrop Legion Post band led a parade from Metcalf Square to Winthrop Cemetery for brief exercises and grave decorations, then returned to Metcalf Square for ceremonies in front of the Post Office despite persistent morning showers.
Club Emanon announces its second annual dance at the Winthrop Yacht Club on Monday June 5. President Miss Theresa Travers and secretary treasurer Miss Marie Gallagher lead a committee of Misses Florence Keenan Marion Gentle Dolly Shields Gertrude Murray Gwen Baker Rita Carter Helen Higgins Dorothy Marden Anne Critch and Libby Halliday. The event aims to be a delightful evening for all attendees with decorative hall styling and a Miss Winthrop selection from among the guests by a panel of judges.
The annual parish reunion at the Church of St John the Evangelist attracted a record attendance at Elks Hall. Rev James A Crowley and his three assistants Fathers Carroll McInnes and Sullivan were honored. A reception ran from 7:30 to 9:00 with best wishes, then Ruby Newmark's Ritz orchestra performed from 9:00 to 9:40 followed by dancing until 1:00 ASM.
The Winthrop Elks Carnival will be held Friday through Sunday June 15 16 17 as a vibrant effort by a large women’s committee led by Mrs Charles E Eskrigge. Members include Mrs Philip Perry Miss Anna Pfannenstiehl and Mrs Richard Kirby among many others who have organized a successful whist party and book sales to boost the event.
Henry J. Rock of 84 Fremont street was named playground instructor for the coming season by the Winthrop Park Board. A local athlete and graduate of local and college programs, Rock has captained football and pitched baseball at St Bonaventure and studied at a Boston medical school. Miss Eileen Hayes and Miss Frances Lill were also named structure girls for the playground school with years of prior experience.
Residents along Sea Foam avenue and Gather streets in Winthrop Beach faced two small fires within an hour, possibly set by a firebug. A prior week a serious blaze in a three family house drew firefighters, now linked to the Wednesday night incidents. A baby carriage and a chair pillow were reported as targets along Sea Foam avenue.
Members of the Non-Partisan League voted to establish a Children’s Day and appointed Arthur M. MacCarthy to head the picnic and outing. The group has received a strong favorable response, signaling growing community support and plans for a June 25th event.
Residents and local press rally support for the planned Children’s Day program at Pleasant Pond on Sunday June 25. The committee reports strong citizen involvement and promises to make the event a success, with many volunteers stepping forward to help.
The Cottage Park Yacht Club launches the yachting season with an informal race for Cottage Park 1% footers. T Class boats sail to South Boston for a club race at the South Boston Yacht Club. Regatta Committee includes Capt. Mo Nickerson as chairman and other members. Board of Judges features Russell A. Cong and others.
A large audience attended a joint recital by the Winthrop School Band and Winthrop High School Orchestra in Osborne Hall on May 25. Under band director Murphy, the group impressed with precise performance, transforming beginning players into polished musicians.
More than 260 children received their first Communion at an 8 am Mass at the Church of St John the Evangelist. Rev James J Carroll celebrated with a children's choir under Mrs Louise C Mitton. A breakfast in the parish hall followed with Rev Crowley presenting pearl rosary beads and Communion certificates to each child. Assistants included Rev Norbert H McInnes Rev John J Sullvan Rev James L Carroll and Miss Margaret Brennan.
Citizens of Winthrop are thanked for their generosity during the recent Poppy Sale. The Metcalf Post No 1664 F W expresses appreciation for the support shown to its relief fund aiding comrades in need. Sincerely, John Ling, Chairman.
Dr Tehyi Hsieh Chinese statesman and diplomat will address the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association on Tuesday evening June 6 at Deane Winthrop Barn Shirley St The event includes a lobster and chicken salad supper at 6 30 with reservations requested by June 5 Admission may apply for the after supper address Mrs Helen Sibley and Miss Grace Sinclair will perform vocal selections.
The Drama League closes a successful season with the three act comedy Jonesy at Odd Fellows Hall. Hazel Wentworth Monroe directed a capable cast as Wilbur Jones romance with Didha Devere at the center. the plot pits Mr and Mrs Jones against the young couple amid humor and human interest.
Department of Public Works opened four bids ranging 109 500 to 162 500 for 50 000 tons of riprap and incidental work. Nichols Boston 109 500 Merritt Chapman Scott New London 111 000 Forward Medford 149 500 Bay State Dredging East Boston 162 500. About 125 000 needed for main work plus 25 000 for engineering and advertising with 1200 feet of breakwater possible. award expected this week and construction to start soon.
Winthrop Elks plan Flag Day ceremonies June 14 in Metcalf Square with a 6:30 parade from Elks Hall led by Lieut Commander John J Madden. Congressman J J Douglas will speak. Legion band to provide music and an electric public address system will broadcast the address.
Winthrop residents represented by Attorney huisstone seek a court injunction to restrain the Board of Health from awarding the garbage removal contract to Frank P. Neeson for two years. The board, after denying a hearing, awarded the bid at 9600 yearly though two lower bids were 8000 by Edward McHugh and 6300 by Capitol Contracting. A hearing date has not been set.
