The notice lists local happenings including Aug. 6 lawn party at Winthrop Lodge Elks on Washington Ave, Aug. 3 special town meeting at the Junior High School gym, Aug. 14 yacht events, and Aug. 17 Garden Club at Mrs Covington's Nahant Ave garden.
Superintendent John Kennedy and crew complete repairs to the Pleasant street sewer system. Workers fixed broken pipes caused by decaying timbers supporting chimneys and deep digging to reach the main line delayed completion for months. Traffic resumed after the last chimney work.
Work on dredging the basins of Cottage Park and Pleasant Park Yacht Clubs will supply mud to Ingleside Park to raise its level above high water. The joint state town project began with preliminary work and pumping planned for early week. After filling, loam will be added and further town funding may be required.
Winthrop Lodge of Elks hosts a Lawn Party on August 6 with a grand amateur contest open to all residents. Judges include A Russell Belcher Frederic Muldoon and Albert Kelliher. Entry blanks available at Lindsay's Filling Station Ford Agency or Elks Home. Also movies vaudeville and dancing by Joe Larkin's Orchestra.
Mr and Mrs Fred W Simson of 134 Court Road announce the engagement of their daughter Ruth to Clarence B Horton, both of Winthrop.
In a July 22 1936 communication from the Adjutant General's office Dr Arthur E Cassidy a prominent local dentist of Washington Avenue was promoted by direction of the President to Major in the Dental Corps United States Army and transferred from the 68th C A to the Harbor Defense of Boston. The oath of office was administered at Fort Banks by Capt Charles B Denny. Cassidy is active in local fraternal civic and military organizations including Winthrop Lodge Elks Winthrop Post American Legion George H Russell Camp USW V I past grand knight Winthrop Council K of C.
Arthur M. MacCarthy will resign as president of Winthrop Highlands Unit No. 89 of the National Union for Social Justice at the Tuesday meeting in Progressive Hall Winthrop Center. A new president will be elected during the session with invited Congressional Officers present. A Penny Sale follows the business portion.
Winthrop police kept a 25 year old Revere man for questioning after an attempted hold-up and assault on Frank A. Hook a 38 year old grocery store owner at Ocean Spray Winthrop Monday Hook was treated at Winthrop Community Hospital for head injuries from a gun believed to have caused a concussion He collapsed at home after release from the hospital The bandit fled the store as a customer Miss Mary McCarthy of Neptune avenue Winthrop entered during the attack
Final plans for the Parish party of St John’s Catholic church were made at a Thursday night meeting. Richard Cox chairs prize purchases with parish aid. James Holland leads tickets. George Hamilton oversees games and prizes. donations welcomed at the rectory or to the chair. A committee adds Margaret Brennan, Alice Sears, Arthur Cassidy, Charles Doherty, Joseph Harvey, Edward Sullivan, and Ruth Harvey.
The annual Winthrop Yacht Club mid summer carnival drew many Winthrop residents for three days of booths merchandise races and entertainment. Commodore Dave Wisely and members thank all who helped make the event a success.
Over one hundred fifty public officials and friends gathered at the Cliff House to honor retiring post office superintendent David Belcher with a testimonial dinner. He received a Hamilton watch with gold chain and knife. William E. Hurley gave tribute as principal speaker.
Two recent gifts for St John’s Episcopal Church will be dedicated at the 10 45 a m service this Sunday. A ciborium is donated by Mr and Mrs Russell Gardner in memory of their son Frederick H Gardner 1914 1931. A thanksgiving offering of altar vases is given by Mr and Mrs Bertram Dimes.
Winthrop boards summon town meeting members for a special session Monday evening in the Junior High School gym to act on three articles, including a WPA appropriation and a salaries study, with a fire alarm signal to aid turnout and a 8 p m start if a quorum is reached.
The Rev L W Williamson of First Baptist Church returns from a monthlong vacation largely in New eee The church resumes services at 11 a m and 7 p m with the Methodist congregation joining in August for joint worship.
