Marblehead race week starts August 1 with three race series under the Eastern burgee and a Boston sponsored meet. The final three days are by the Corinthian club, offering a chance for small-boat sailors to win silverware as the interclub season resumes.
The Winthrop Democratic Town Committee held an organization meeting on Friday evening July 17 and elected officers for the term. Frank A. Farrell was unanimously reelected chairman. Other officers include Frederic J. Muldoon, Ernest B. Pevear, John W. Hendricks, Grace Farrell, George C. Jenkins as vice chairmen, Ursula R. Muldoon as secretary, and Edward J. Cronin as treasurer.
Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion under Junior Vice Commander Ross Batchelder reports 27 new members added at a Friday meeting at the Dugout. The total membership reaches 265, ten short of the state quota of 275, with ongoing efforts to recruit and fill the gap in coming weeks.
The Winthrop Yacht Club mid summer carnival opened Thursday evening and will continue Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening. Commodore Dave Wisely invites local citizens to enjoy the festivities with all forms of entertainment and special awards planned for each evening.
Winthrop Lodge of Elks shifts from the mid summer carnival to a lawn party on Thursday at 6 on its grounds. Sewall Verney is general chairman. Exalted Ruler John Egan selects him. The program includes movies vaudeville and a large amateur contest open to all residents. Amateurs may enter with Verney at the clubhouse.
Albert L Pigon of Chester Avenue was appointed temporary town accountant by the Board of Selectmen to fill the vacancy created by the death of I W Crowell. The appointment is indefinite. Pigon has served as town accountant for two years and led the office for six months. He was formerly assistant treasurer at Marstons Restaurants and is a World War veteran and member of Winthrop Post No 146 American Legion.
Charles F. Hurley Democratic nominee for Governor spoke to over three hundred townspeople at the Point Shirley Club reception. The event, hosted by the Hurley Club, included escorts, clam chowder, an original campaign song by Joseph Berry, and speeches by local officials and supporters.
Sunday evening church services will continue through August at the First Church of Christ Scientist located at 165 Winthrop Street. Services start at 7 30 p m and all are warmly invited to attend.
On Tuesday afternoon Miss Gunhilde Ivergen hosted a tea for Miss Blanche Horgen of Brooklyn New York. Horgen is spending the summer here.
The Winthrop Townsend Club reports 1000 members as meetings grow. With the political season near, residents discuss the Townsend Plan and its costs, benefits, and questions about employment, living costs, and machinery impact. New officers for the season include Madden as President and Samuel Kline as Vice-President.
Giraud Edwards son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Edwards of 259 Bowdoin Street has been chosen King of the Order of Sir Galahad at the national Episcopal Camp for Boys at Camp Oatka Sebago Lake Maine. He is a sophomore at Tufts College.
Announcement by the Board of Selectmen states a special town meeting is planned for Monday evening at the Junior High School gym to consider further WPA project appropriations for Winthrop. An amount of 10 000 to 15 000 dollars is likely to be requested to fund continued and new WPA efforts, including a Shirley Street sea wall reconstruction near the Winthrop Yacht Club. The wall would be repaired and extended with additional material to form a sloped face.
The Advisory Committee of Winthrop passes a resolution honoring Henry James Barry who died July 3 1936. Barry served as Selectman Chairman and Solicitor and contributed as Secretary of the Advisory Committee with municipal expertise and fidelity to town government. The resolution directs its recording and a copy to his family.
Mr. A. L Merrill assumes ownership and management of Ballem's Filling Station at Winthrop Bridge with 18 years oil industry experience. He will be aided by Tubba Carter and plans improvements including a covered lubritorium and rest rooms. Local motorists are invited to use the station for gasoline oils and servicing.
Gerald Sonny O Neill aged 12 of Taylor Street Winthrop drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Glory Hole near Battery station Winthrop. He slipped from a rubber tube as companions shouted for help and could not be saved despite a rescue effort before Hardy Underwood rescued the body with medical aid arriving from police and fire units.
