Thousands from six to sixty enter the Know New England contest sponsored by the New England Press Association. Names and spellings appear in public libraries and Britannica. Still time to enter by writing to the editor or contest editor at 14 Beacon.
Opening Monday evening the annual carnival of the Richard F. Metcalf Post V F W at post headquarters 66 Shore Drive will continue each evening through Saturday. A large crowd attends the midway games music ferris wheel and other features with an amateur show and prizes awarded to the evening winner. Three days remain Thursday Friday and Saturday plan to attend.
Yachting calendar feature as yachtsmen from Massachusetts Bay clubs gather at Winthrop Yacht Club for Ladies Night on July 22. Dinner at 10:30 p m followed by dancing to 1:00 a m. Event led by commanders David W Wisely George J Hamilton Thomas Sheehan Ralph Baker Hosea D White and Commodore Hemingway.
Rev Richard P McClintock rector of St Pauls Lancaster New Hampshire will exchange with Rev Ralph M Harper rector of St Johns on two Sundays July 25 and August 1 He will officiate at 8 00 am and 10 45 am services this Sunday The sermon at 10 45 am will be Are Ye Able The Lancaster rector is son of Mrs Maud P McClintock 1 Sargent terrace in his senior year at Winthrop High School
Two Winthrop youths Cyril Wooding and Robert Henderson captured a four foot twenty five pound shark at Winthrop beach after a brief chase. Wooding spotted the shark and Henderson struck it with a rock before the pair carried the carcass to Henderson's home.
A summer congregation at Union Congregational Church heard Rev. R. E. Gilmore preach on Fool's Gold, condemning the modern gambling craze. He outlined ten points denouncing gambling as an evil motive to gain wealth and corrupt society.
The state announces a Sept 28 special election date to replace the late Congressman William P. Connery Jr. of Lynn with primaries Sept 14. Only declared candidates include Republican C. F. Nelson Pratt of Saugus and Democrat Lawrence J. Connery, his secretary. Filing deadlines are Aug 25 for local certifications and Aug 31 for state submissions.
Mrs Harber again offers her Winthrop street lawn for a Legion Auxiliary bridge and whist party on July 29. Proceeds support rehabilitation and child welfare. Chair Edna Brooks, with Elsie Cashman Sadie McNeil Gertrude Daily Margaret Wilson Alice Clark and Doris Burns. Prizes and a dainty collation. All welcome for an enjoyable afternoon.
The Point Shirley Union Church opened Sunday night with a 30 minute community sing along with a Junior Choir from the Beach Union Congregational Church. Miss Jean Viola Shiner sang a solo, and services will continue each Sunday evening through the summer with plans for a vestry dinner and midweek sings highlighting local talent.
Plans under consideration call for additional improvements at Ingleside Park. Work will begin today, per Park Commissioners Chairman Albert T. Hayes. The same contractors will perform the work as funds allow from the $6500 allocated at the special town meeting.
The State Public Utilities Commission ordered a $9000 rate reduction for commercial customers of Suburban Gas & Electric Light Co. serving Revere and Winthrop. The decision cites a voluntary October reduction and no evidence of padded payrolls or excessive expenses. New annual and short term commercial rates set at seven and a half cents for 30 kilowatt hours, six cents for the next 100, and five cents thereafter.
Winthrop Emblem Club No. 15 schedules its annual outing for Monday July 26 at Middleton Arms. Members travel in private cars. Agnes LaFayette chairs the event with Louise Sennett handling sports Melvina overseeing bridge and Louise Kelly selling tickets. A detailed afternoon program precedes a 6 pm dinner at the Middleton Arms.
Members of the 301st Field Artillery Veterans Association of the 76th Division AEF plan a no cost reunion and picnic at Fort Devens on Sunday July 25 beginning at 12 Noon. Veterans are urged to attend and contact Commander Thos L Thistle at 30 State Street Boston to be added to the mailing list.
