The Board of Selectmen in regular session passed an ordinance setting the motor vehicle speed limit at 15 miles per hour. Chief McNeill was instructed to enforce the law due to reckless driving and widespread disregard for automobile regulations. The board also authorized new enforcement actions affecting storekeepers, with a note about Sunday morning grocery sales.
Kevin Bergin, visiting for the summer, was pulled from the water after sinking three times during a swim near Parker Street. Dr Parker and Captain Coggins aided him while Mr Priest of Cambridge rescued Bergin and kept him alive awaiting medical care. Officer McDonald filed the incident report for Chief McNeill.
Selectmen Mahaney and Benson with Mr Flynn and the Red Cross opened the War Veterans Hall to help soldiers and sailors apply for the Commonwealth’s $100 gratuity. Over 100 men came Tuesday night and more on Wednesday. volunteers including Guptill Hagman Brown Flynn and Red Cross workers assisted, with reviews by Murphy and Marsh and local officials supervising.
By registered mail to the State House, the boys are praised for a thoughtful gesture that renders them a service once again. The item reflects community pride in youth initiative and civic-minded activity.
Chas E Hatch known as owner and proprietor of the New Winthrop Theatre, helps community members without charging admission to cripples. Mrs. Julia A Callaghan travels to Keyport New Jersey for a summer stay at the Cowan home where theatrical manager Mr. Robert Cowan resides. Her nephew Captain Smith, just back from overseas service, hosted her in New York.
A Winthrop library meeting plans a repeat of the Pageant on Friday August Sth at Fort Banks for the Army Relief Society. The note includes the society’s purpose and lists executive officers prepared by Col Howell, urging public support to swell the needed fund.
The Review reports busy work at the Review Office as applications are completed for the $100 Massachusetts gratuity for service members and widows. Notaries and justices of the peace are available free of charge at Gallai 317 Main Street to assist, thanks to Daniel J. Honan’s effort in delivering blanks and aiding soldiers and sailors.
At Fort Banks the Military Hospital Aid Society cares for 74 boys in the hospital and convalescent ward. The July 11 visit was hosted by Mrs. T. P. Knudson with aides Mrs. A. C. Jackson Mrs. O. Kertula and Mrs. Nina Kempton. Upcoming hosts include Mrs. Chester Norton on July 22 and Mrs. Maude P. McClintock on July 25.
Captain Oswald W. Holmes has returned from overseas duty in France England and Germany after 21 months serving as a dental surgeon with American Expeditionary Forces. He was with the 3rd Army of Occupation First Division in Germany.
Captain Holmes was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Dental Reserve Corps on August 4, 1917 and sent to Camp Devens with the 76th Division. He sailed from Brest on July 1 and expects discharge soon. Mrs. Callahan, beloved by Winthrop children as Aunt Julie, enjoys a motor trip through the Catskills visiting her cousins the Misses Healy of Springfield.
