Winthrop Welcomes World War Veterans With Grand Celebration

Winthrop held a city wide Victory and Welcome Home gala last Thursday night marking the end of the Great War era. Thousands filled Elks Club and yacht clubs with free vaudeville, movies, and refreshments as Com. H F Burroughs and local wartime committees organized events, a midnight bonfire, and a massive 10 AM parade led by Col. James P Howell. A spectacular pageant America in the World War drew over 15,000 spectators, praised for its ambitious 30 day creation and featuring Maud Murray, Ruth Richards, and Edith Cavell roles. a second performance is planned for Fort Banks in August.

Town pageant praised by diverse residents and leaders

A chorus of locals lauds a town pageant likening it to Caliban and Joan of Arc, with calls for a repeat to be held around August 1. Participants urged to preserve regalia as plans move to Page 6.
