Winthrop Golf Club Family Day Planned for July 13

Winthrop Golf Club invites members and friends to a July 13 Family Day at the club with events from 1 p m to midnight. Activities include a member and non member tournament, putting and driving contests, nearest to pin, a buffet supper, dancing with an orchestra, and a Grand Drawing for a 1935 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe. Tickets are available from club members.

Garden Club Opens Outdoor Meeting At Mrs Bragdon Home

The Garden Club of Winthrop held its first outdoor meeting of the season at Mrs Mabel S Bragdon's Bartlett home. Morning and afternoon sessions were conducted outdoors with indoor reception and light refreshments served. Continued on Page 8.

Soap Box Derby Planned Here With Big Prizes

The All-America Soap Box Derby, co sponsored by Chevrolet and local dealers, offers a four year scholarship and other prizes. Open to boys 6 to 16 in Winthrop with guardian involvement to enter at 57 Putnam Street Fullerton Inc. Local winners go to Akron Ohio on August 11 for national trials.

State Police Service Course Adopted by State Education

The police training syllabus expands with a Blue Book style manual on police conduct and duties. The University Extension Division of the State Department of Education will offer a course in preparation for the October statewide civil service examination for police positions.

Major General Fox Conner announced 1300 Massachusetts youths are among 2390 slated for Citizens Military Training Camps opening today in New England. More than 4000 youths applied for 2300 places. VFW Post Carnival Planned for July 15

The Richard F. Metcalf Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at 66 Shore Drive will host its annual carnival July 15 to 20. The event features Smith's Diving Horses performing from a platform into a shallow water tank, plus band concerts and fair booths. Admission is free, inviting the public to enjoy the activities.

Drowning Tragedy Averted at Pleasant Beach

A near tragedy at Simon J Donovan Beach was averted when Lt Robert Tucker rescued a boy from a draining channel off Ingleside Park. Witness Betty Campbell called for help and Tucker revived the youth with artificial respiration. The incident highlighted dangers posed by the drain extending from the shore into a deep ditch.

Camp Powow Opens For Scouts July 8th

Camp Powow the Lynn Council Boy Scouts summer training camp opens for its sixteenth season of six weeks on July 8. The 24 acre Ames Thiry site in Massachusetts lies 33 miles from Central Square Lynn and is possible through Greater Lynn citizens. The program preserves scout movement features with additions for in camp activities. Troops are urged to bring leadership. hikes trips boats canoe expeditions overnight camps cookouts and games are planned.

Town Eyes 35000 Special Meeting For ERA Projects

ERA Administrator Wm J Walsh proposes a 35000 project list for material costs at a special town meeting within two to three weeks. Projects include 5000 linear feet of granolithic sidewalks and street sewer work plus 4500 for Tagieside Park filling and 2500 for school repairs and painting with ERA funding covering labor.

McElligott May Head RFC in Massachusetts

Joseph P. Carney the RFC manager in Massachusetts is expected to resign to join a Treasury post at the President’s request. Bernard McElligott, assistant to Mr. Carney, is considered likely to be selected to head the RFC in Massachusetts. McElligott previously served as ERA assistant administrator under Carney and Rotch.

Park Department announces lifeguard coverage at Donovan Beach during peak season after a near drowning incident near Simon J Donovan Street. A wire screen guards the drain end to warn bathers and deter children from taking risks. Consideration is given to extending the drain box two feet into deep water to reduce danger.
