Fifty Years on Railroad Veteran Fireman Remains Active
Joe Cyr, oldest Narrows Gauge employee and Winthrop resident at 34 Sunnyside Ave, recalls starting on the Boston to Lynn line in 1875. He moved from Canada with his family, helped dig the tunnel, and became a fireman in 1877 and an engineer the next year. He praises the line as the finest little railroad and plans more years in the cab. His family includes wife Rosanna, daughters Edma, Agnes, and Florence, and sons Francis, Fred, and Rev. Edward N. He recalls a fatal Orient Heights accident and a switch mishap, yet remains enamored with railroading.
