The big clock at E. B. Newton School stopped early this week and several attempts to restart it failed. Supt. Douglas ordered it kept at 12 high noon until a clock specialist can be secured to repair it promptly.
Prominent Winthrop citizens urged the Board of Selectmen to retain Chairman Joshua Remby for another year citing his experience. Friends also back Fred W. Fisher for Water Commissioner and Albert R. Stedfast seeks reappointment to the School Committee after 17 years on the board.
Police raided 203 Shirley Street finding two stills producing hootch and four mash containers. One man, Joseph Cohen, in charge, was arrested as officers later seized 185 gallons more alcohol from a nearby garage. Three Chelsea and Winthrop men were charged with illegal transportation and keeping alcohol.
The veterans of Winthrop’s National Guard unit band together in a Veterans Association marking an epoch for the town’s only guard company. The article recalls the January 15 1915 founding of the Fifth Regiment M V M unit under Richmond G Stoehr then a second lieutenant, noting rapid growth to a full company within four months.
