Citizens rally to support Winthrop Community Hospital by donating gifts and cash for an Emergency Battery Operating Light. The lobby tree welcomes canned goods bed linens pillow cases bed lamps and other items as the community joins the appeal. Donors include Woodside Hardware John Mc Murray Dr George Gateley and many local merchants with the full donor list to be printed next week.

St Johns Episcopal Church plans special Christmas Eve services from 11:00 p m to 12:05 a m with doors open at 10:15 for a Creche display by Charles B Graves and parish youths. Extra seats in the church and Robing Room will welcome the public. a four page four color Christmas folder with the Christmas Prayer will be given to all attendees.

Birth of Christ Display at Bennison Estate Previewed
A Nativity scene arranged by Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Bennison on their estate was shown to clergymen and guests. The open set features Mary, Joseph, the manger, star and angels with the Three Wise Men and shepherds. Public viewing runs Thursday through Sunday with Christmas carols and Santa Claus on Friday and Saturday 2 to 7 PM.

Winthrop Legion Charity Show Aids Local Churches
Winthrop Legion held its annual charity show last Saturday collecting nearly fifteen hundred food items donated to St John the Evangelist and several churches for distribution. Co chairs Frank Kirby and Allan Carlton led a team of legionnaires aided by James Chambers Frank Masterson James Law John Murphy George Pierce Fritz Westlin Anthony Monti George Cashman Ross Batchelder Louis Zetter with Miles Dauley and Frank Hill distributing items. The post also hosted a Christmas party for local children with Santa Claus Punch and Judy and gifts for all attendees. A turkey bridge at Legion headquarters Saturday night raised funds for the American Legion Christmas basket fund.

Funeral services for Michael J. Grimes a longtime town figure died after a long illness were held at St John the Evangelist Church. Rev James F Grimes of St Agnes Arlington was celebrant. Grimes had lived in the town for thirty years and worked with Kell Grimes Company of Boston until illness confined him at home.
