The Winthrop Community Hospital received numerous gifts for a Community Hospital Christmas. Citizens delivered cash donations and goods across categories including doctors, druggists, hardware, florists, garages, shoe stores, markets, dry goods, and memorial lamps. A final gift report will appear next week as contributions continue to arrive.
At First Church of Winthrop the congregation honored Rev. Harry Belmont Hill and his wife with roses and a substantial gift after Sunday service. The Finance Committee announced rising attendance and a year end balance with all bills paid. The couple expressed thanks as the parish saluted their ministry and extended New Year wishes.
Holiday thoughts give way to politics as several hopefuls consider bids for office next March. Rumors link two former selectmen to the race with one planning a comeback, while the Republican League is expected to endorse Walter G. Baker and David Belcher and possibly Roy W. Pigeon if he runs. Nomination papers are due in early February, forecasting contested ballots and potential changes in several offices.
The Quest and Question Club will meet Tuesday January 4 at 1 PM at 59 Somerset Road the home of Mrs Frank Douglas. The afternoon topic is Behind the Scenes of a Crazy Business under the drama committee chair Mrs Fred S Davis.
Christmas season lights flood Winthrop as nearly every home glows with color. Principal displays shine at Charles R Bennison residence on Winthrop Street and Ralph Halford home on Nahant Avenue, with notable scenes on Cliff Avenue and Bartlett Parkway. Communities from Cottage Park to Courtspark boast bright, picturesque arrangements drawing praise from visitors.
The Eagle Scout ceremony honored Rob ert Walker and Paul Dwyer on December 29 at 8 p m in Shirley Street School Auditorium. The program featured Myrton O. Hill as chair, investiture by Albert McGaw, and badges awarded by Harold Kilgore Robert Fowler Dr B D Freedman Arthur Campbell with Lincoln K. Drake presenting Council awards. Donald Gardner led the ceremony assisted by Commissioner Flinn.
Due to high demand from many communities, the Bennison Nativity of Christ scene will remain open until New Year’s Night. Thousands have viewed it with nightly carols, and two traffic officers helped manage crowds on peak evenings.
The Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association invites members and friends to a Barn gathering on Tuesday January 11 featuring a 6 30 dinner directed by Mrs Caroline Kirby then old time songs. Addresses by noted Winthrop citizens and invitations for Nellie Griffin and Charles P Floyd have been received with others expected. Supper reservations via Ocean 2410R.
The Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club will hold its regular meeting at Mrs. Wendell A. Hodgkins's home 122 Court Rd on Monday January 3 1938 at 11 am The session will cover The Art of Table Arrangement with slides The roll call will invite members to share notes on house plants.
Rabbi Samuel J. Abrams of Temple Chabai Sholom was guest speaker at a Brotherhood meeting of Temple Tifereth Israel held in the Community Building on Shirley Street Sunday evening December 26.
