An effort to place a gift Christmas tree in Winthrop Community Hospital lobby drew an encouraging response last week. Citizens are urged to leave tokens under the tree by Christmas Eve, with gifts ranging from a few cents to ten dollars, for hospital use.
A Christmas play They That Walk in the Darkness will be presented Sunday at 4 o'clock in St John’s Episcopal Parish House under Mrs Horace A Edwards direction. Cast includes Miriam Ruth Bissell Ruth Virginia Shackley Mary Olivia Whittier Joash Warren Bennett Joseph Robert Belcher Amon George Blair Esther Janet Pigeon Rachel Evelyn Whittier Rebecca Helena Tsatsos Ramah Clarice Tsatsos Jonathan Louis McCartney First King Richard Foulkes Second King Ralph Tucker Shepherds Robert Cates Stanley Melillo. The public is welcomed.
The planned coronation for Winthrop's movie queen was cancelled by the Junior Hadassah sponsors. Officials announced no winner would receive the key to the town, and Boston papers were alerted that a Winthrop girl had been labeled movie queen without official selection.
Handel's Messiah will be performed at the First Church of Winthrop Methodist Episcopal on Sunday December 26 at 4 30 PM. A large trained chorus directed by Carle W Malley with soloists Oliver Appleton Newcombe Clara Beal and Harry D Newcombe will render the work. The public is invited to attend.
Winthrop Post American Legion sponsors its annual canned goods show this Saturday at 9:30 AM at both Winthrop theatres. Each can of food admits one boy or girl to the event, with all collected groceries donated to local churches for distribution to needy families in town.
Local chatter suggests few candidates as the annual town election approaches in March. Voters differ on incumbents though several Board of Selectmen members are expected to seek re election. Some Republicans eye the representative contest next fall influencing the town race.
Winthrop Woman's Club members held a Candle Light Tea at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston with a guided tour, a musical program by Miss Dorothy Earhart and Mr. Leo Litvin, and a Dutch Room tea. Earlier the Art Committee hosted a museum trip and plans further Boston arts visits, while Tufts Glee Club Concert and Dance in Elk's Hall raised funds for the Emergency Fund Committee.
A worker at Ingleside Park on WPA misplaced three one dollar bills Tuesday between the bank and First National Stores. Finder should return money to Phil Anderson at Ingleside Park.
