Unemployment Committee Presents Minstrel Show

The Winthrop Unemployment Committee cancels its Beano Party to stage a minstrel show and revue at Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday evening December 14. Proceeds go to the Christmas basket and coal fund. The event is organized by Mrs. William G. Harber Mrs. Gladys Hayman and Mrs. Kathryn Pevear with May M. Keegan directing.

Welch Elected Winthrop Captain For 1936

Thomas Welch of Winthrop High was chosen captain of the 1936 football team at a lettermen meeting. He succeeds co captains Phil Chardon and Howie Freeman and has been an outstanding tackle for two seasons. Welch also plays basketball and baseball. Only six seniors graduate, and the second team showed strong prospects this fall.

CWA Members Press Winthrop Board on WPA Jobs Allocation

Delegation from the CWA Club of Winthrop met the Board of Selectmen at the regular meeting to urge action ensuring WPA and other local projects are placed by their trade qualifications. The board aims to comply but notes that Boston WPA HQ currently controls hiring, limiting local Selectmen’s jurisdiction.

Committee To Meet Officials Of Road For Settlement

A nine member committee was appointed at a Bastor Revere Beach and Lynn railroad meeting in Lynn to confer with road officials on disputed issues. The steps follow Governor Curley’s intervention that paused strike actions. No settlement has been reached though the employees committee is expected to meet railroad officials next week.

Dredge Shirley Gut Urged by Winthrop Citizens

About 100 residents and town officials attended a Pleasant Park Yacht Club meeting to back a Federal hearing on December 18 in Boston for dredging Shirley Gut. Commodore Hamilton and Rep. Honan urged united action to persuade Army engineers to authorize a navigable channel to ease health and navigation concerns.

Selectmen Schedule Special Town Meeting on WPA Projects

The board set a December 23 8:00 p m meeting at the Junior High School gym to consider a 30000 appropriation for WPA material costs. The total request would reach 55000 with the earlier 2580 sum, aiming to extend WPA work to June 30 1936 and provide employment over welfare.
