Rotary Club Begins Its Second Year

Winthrop Rotary Club starts its second year on July 1 with officers led by President Arthur E. Boudreau and Curtis L. Hicks as first vice president. The club organized traffic markers in cooperation with state and city agencies and held two public meetings at the Junior High School featuring speakers on youths and social problems.

Mayor Tobin Must Approve Elevate Bill for Winthrop Loop

The Boston Elevated plans to take over the Winthrop loop of the Narrow Gauge railroad but needs Mayor Tobin’s approval on return from Ireland. Two thirds of the Metropolitan Transit Council must back the deal along with Winthrop voters at a town meeting and approvals from Elevated trustees stockholders and the Federal Court.

Flowers and Herbs In Cookery Meeting Notes

The Garden Club of Winthrop met August 14 at Mrs. Grace Gove’s garden in Bartlett road. Miss Dorothy Kinney presided. Mrs. Ethel Skinner invited members to an August 21 outing in Newton Highlands. Members discussed new plants and bulbs, and tuber lilies from the south were shown. Mrs. Grace N. Pearce urged bald eagle protection.

First Sermon By New Pastor Here

The Reverend Rowland C Adams has accepted the call as the new pastor of Union Congregational Church and will deliver his first sermon next Sunday August 20. He is a graduate of Indiana University and Andover Newton Theological Seminary and comes from the First Congregational Church of Newcastle NH. Adams is known for organizing youth activities and upholds liberal theology. His sermon titled Walking Together with God aims to fill the church as worshippers greet the new minister. He and Mrs Adams reside at 70 Cottage Ave Beach section.

Young Driver Crashes Fence Avoiding Children

A driver swerved to miss children who ran onto Shore Drive and smashed through a surrounding fence at the corner with Wave Way Ave. The car and fence suffered heavy damage but the driver and the children escaped injury.

Legion Post 146 Heads Taunton Convention

Headquarters for Winthrop Post No. 146 A L at the State Convention in Taunton will be at the Ward Eight Club on B y street. A luncheon after the parade is planned Saturday Aug 19 1939 and the Sons of Legion Band will be hosted at St Jean the Baptist Society rooms after the parade. Delegates from Winthrop include Francis J. Rogers P C and Lewis B.

Legislature Enacts Bill For Purchase Of Narrow Gauge By El Railway

The Legislature approved enabling legislation to permit the Boston Elevated Railway to acquire the Winthrop branch of the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad on terms set in the bill. Final enactment requires multiple authorities and postings, with a projected fare of fifteen cents and a $15,000 annual subsidy by Winthrop.
