The American Legion in Winthrop plans annual carnivals to revive patriotic spirit for Independence Day. Beginning in July 1919, ex‑soldier Richard, their first commander, leads the post as they prepare the event.
David Kurland a 16 year old East Boston boy on parole from an industrial school was taken into custody last week in Winthrop. Police tied him to two local house break ins and nearly a dozen more in Beachmont and Revere through fingerprint evidence.
Winthrop Boy Scouts Cub Pack committee invites boys ages nine to eleven plus families to a Thursday April 11 meeting at Highlands School. The program features an Indian show by Cubs and a new sound moving picture of Africa trip with natives and lions. Doors open 7 and close 9 with no admission fee. only a cub age sponsorship. Howard E. The Welfare Department seeks donated furniture and toys for needy families in Winthrop. Items in any condition will be accepted for repair and painting by a WPA project. Call Ocean 2111 or Ocean 3060 to arrange pickup.
Beginning Tuesday April 16 classes for Civil Service examination prep will be held at Winthrop Senior High School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 30. Tuition 5 for part one 9 for both parts. Physicals around April 25. Applicants 21 to 35 American citizens Massachusetts resident. Register at Senior High School April 16 7 30.
A Winthrop resident Albert KE. Keleher thanks Chief William F. Pumphret and Patrolman David Kurland for promptly apprehending a thief who entered his home on a recent Monday. The letter, dated April 7 1940, lauds the department for its courteous conduct and admirable efforts.
Under a committee led by Hans C. Kleemann a lineup of guest speakers will fill Union Congregational Church pulpit for several Sundays. On April 14 Rev. Charles R. Small will preach at morning service and speak to the Men's Class at noon. April 28 features Rev. Thos. K. Call delivering the morning sermon, with Rev. R. K. Gilmore preaching that evening.
The Winthrop Golf Club opens on April 19 1940 with greens in use. The Board of Governors adopts a policy allowing men under thirty five to join for 35 dollars annually, comprising 20 for membership and 15 for golf privileges. Members over thirty pay 55 dollars, single women 27 40. The club touts landscaping progress and civic appeal to attract local players.
The Boston Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad rolling stock and equipment including four ferries and three buses sold to Samuel Gordon & Sons Inc of Chelsea for 118756 after U.S. District Judge George C. Sweeney approved the bid. Other offers ranged from 118500 to 104200. Gordon plans to junk the equipment and sell rails and engines domestically.
Mrs Ernest Griffin was re-elected president of the Woman's Seaman's Friend Society at the 45th annual luncheon in Boston. The meeting showcased annual reports on caring for sick and hospitalized seamen. Treasurer Mrs Mabel C Marsh reported year activities cost 2839.56 with 4215.81 receipts and a year end balance of 1376.25.
