A joint meeting of the Board of Selectmen Advisory Committee and Planning Board Tuesday evening tackled a plan to widen the narrow Jefferson Street before development begins on the vacant lot. The discussion aimed to set a definite course of action and continue the issue to page 7 for further details.
Plans submitted to the Board of Selectmen by Suburban Gas and Electric for laying underground cables in Metcalf square to support a proposed new lighting fixture plan.
Representative Edgar L Power will file a petition with the State Legislature asking tax exemption for the Winthrop Golf Club property for 1928 and the remaining years of the lease. President J Frank Rebuck explains that the lease requires an annual rental and a minimum $50,000 in improvements, with the club officially started after a 1921 town meeting.
The report of the condition of the Winthrop Trust Company of Winthrop Massachusetts at the close of business March 27 1929 is submitted to the Commissioner of Banks. The commercial department shows the last thirty days average reserve holdings including currency and specie 3.69 percent deposits with reserve banks 6.76 percent U S and Massachusetts bonds 6.00 percent. The figures include currency 27008368 deposits 2383000 bonds 3734145 and other items 440519 718586 11.50. Presidents and treasurer sign under penalties of perjury.
A notice from the responsible authority states the dedication of the new Town Hall is probable within a month or six weeks. The form of the dedication and whether it will be a quiet event or follow the usual procedures remain to be decided.
The drive for funds for the new First Church of Winthrop Methodist Episcopal reached its $200000 objective Sunday night as bells rang. From March 20 to 31 under Pastor C Oscar Ford and Dr F H Divine pledges totaled $200500 to be paid over five years. Volunteers secured about $8000 in pledges in the final day effort.
Five amendments to the East Boston Tunnel Bill sponsored by Representative H L Shattuck were voted down by the House of Representatives as the measure advances to a third reading.
Town Solicitor Leon C. Guptill and Town Clerk Bessie L. Dodge prepared four certified copies of the traffic rules and regulations adopted at the Town Meeting. Two copies will go to the Attorney General and two to the Department of Public Works for approval. The rules take effect thirty days after approval.
An elderly woman and her daughter in law were overcome by smoke when a fire destroyed the upper portion of a wooden dwelling at 7 Wilshire Street. Mrs. Mary Furlong and Mrs. Ella Furlong were revived by Patrolman James Turner after being unable to escape their beds. Firemen feared the blaze would spread as wind fanned the flames, with damage estimated at 2500.
District Chief John F. Good of the Boston Fire Department conducted a comprehensive inspection of Winthrop’s fire service. He recommends a permanent full time chief, abolition of the call men system, additional permanent staff, and stronger building and garage inspections with weekly drills and formal training for fire crews. Selectman John P. Clancy releases the report, noting aims for a businesslike, transparent town governance.
