Another Negro Riot Feared In Oklahoma
Durant Oklahoma August 31 Five hundred armed men search east and south of Durant for a Negro who yesterday chased Mrs J B Ferrer and her children near Pirtle. If captured the Negro will likely be lynched. A child saw him in the cotton patch and the pursuit led to the house. James Melton fired twice and officials pursued. The man headed south toward Colbert where many Wins are reported. This is the third attempted crime in the county since a woman was killed north of Durant two weeks ago. Expulsion of Negroes from the county is feared. There are no Negroes in Pirtle. In other communities they are moving out. Ardmore Oklahoma August 31 Clarence Posey the Negro charged with donning female clothes and kidnapping a baby near Colbert was brought to Ardmore and jailed for safekeeping. Sheriff William Garrett began swearing in deputies amid rumors of a lynching mob from Calvert. Posey denies confessing and says any confession was coerced. He ate well but is nervous. Reports say Bryan County residents plan to remove him from the jail if needed. The sheriff seeks to avoid a lynching by keeping him secure in the county where the crime occurred.
